  • New and feeling down...

So today is officially my 14th day on induction and I plan to stay on it for another two weeks. I am not sure how much weight I have lost so far because our first scale was dying as I started. I have lost anywhere from 3-7 pounds depending on the scale. The past week I have been going back and forth 1 pound. I lose it and then I gain it. I seem to be at a stand still and am not sure if this is normal or what. I have not cheated, and I stick to the diet very well and am even exercising 3 times a week...

any advice? i dont want to give up but I am so frustrated... =(

Want to share your menu with us? We have a review your menu section. That may help. Also it is very normal to have a pause. I had one in my second week. But it just started to roll again. Do you have a lot to lose?
Hang in there. You are doing just fine.

Well I eat something different almost every day but this is usually what its like...

      Breakfast
      2-3 eggs scrambled
      2 pieces of turkey bacon
1 cup of coffee with 1 spenda

      snack
      atkins shake

      lunch
      salad w/ chicken breast

      snack
hard boiled egg or a pickle or cut up veggies

      dinner
      salad with lots of veggies
and usually a piece of meat

and I drink 64+ oz of water a day

my goal right now is to lose about 30lbs, after that I will set another goal. I am not sure how much I want to lose because it all depends on how I feel. I may want to lose another 30 or 40 after that.

Did you take body measurements too? Are your clothes looser?

Yes, it's not unusual for your weight loss to slow down or even pause in the second week of Induction. There will be weeks when you'll lose more, weeks when you'll lose nothing and even weeks when you'll gain. As long as the trend is downward and you stick to the plan, nothing to be worried about.

There seems to be a lot of protein and little fat in your menu. Atkins is high fat, moderate protein, low carb and excess protein can be converted into glucose, so we have to be careful not to overeat it. For Induction, the percentages you should aim for are 65% fat, 5% carbs and 30% protein.

I don't know how many cups of vegetables you're eating, but we should be eating 3 during Induction. You can add more in OWL Rung 1.

Atkins products sometimes stall weight loss, so it's better not to have them, especially during Induction.

        Is your coffee decaf?

You are doing well, but there are a few tweaks that could make a huge difference. Up your fat, lower your protein a bit, measure your veggie amounts so you are not exceeding the allowance, and lose the shakes. And drink your water.

            Re: New and feeling down...

you've been given some great advice .... all I can say is listen and do what you've been advised.

With the Atkins plan we are suppose to be changing our old bad habits and start eating whole fresh foods - the shakes and bars may be convenient but they aren't induction friendly (check the ingredients). They are marketed by a company who only wants to make money, not help us loose weight.

The pickles you are eating -- are they sugar free? Is the coffee decaf or regular?

Many people believe by staying on extended induction they will loose weight, but honestly moving to Rung 1 and adding an additional 5 net carbs of veggies helps many of us (me included) loose additional weight. When I stayed on extended induction I lose nothing....after 2 weeks on extended induction I added 5 additional net carbs of veggies I started loosing again.

Good luck to you -- like I said before, listen to the advise you've been given.

              Re: New and feeling down...

I eat the exact amount of veggies and protein and fat that it says. The shakes are approved for all phases of the diet though...and I work them in so that I dont go over or under anything. I guess thats why I am so frustrated. I am following it to the t. And like I said I eat something different every day.

No my coffee is not decaf but we can have 2 caffeinated drinks a day and I only have one.

Thank you for all your advice though! I will try to see if I can maybe eat more fat.

Could any of you share your menus with me that you used during induction?

What we are saying is even though they SAY they are approved for all phases of the diet they stall so many people because the ingredients in them aren't in the induction approved foods.

You ask for our help - we are telling you what we know -- caffeine and shakes are known to slow or stall weight loss....if you want to loose those are 2 places to change.

I really do appreciate all the advice, I am just trying to learn. I have read the atkins website over and over so I am just going by what I had read.

any tips are welcome and appreciated.

I would love some new ideas of what to eat though so any menu ideas would be great!

again thanks for all the advice everyone

Oh, let me guess. You must be following the latest guidelines of Atkins Nutritionals. On this bulletin board we go by DANDR 2002 instead.

According to DANDR 2002, which is the latest edition of the book published while Dr. Atkins was alive...

... veggies are limited to 3 cups per day (not 12-15 g) and you can have either 2 cups of "salad vegetables" and 1 cup of "other vegetables" or 3 cups of "salad vegetables".

... shakes can cause stalls, even if all the ingredients are legal (they aren't in all of them). Years ago, there used to be a separate page on atkins.com, saying that this might happen. That page was now removed by Atkins Nutritionals.

... regular coffee may or may not stall or slow down your weight loss. Caffeine may stimulate insulin production (does not manifest necessarily through cravings) and insulin is a fat storing hormone. This is why Dr. Atkins wrote that we should avoid drinking regular coffee and choose decaf instead. There is no "2 cups of regular coffee" rule in DANDR 2002.

Menus. The best thing is to enter your current menu in FitDay or some other similar tool and tweak from there. Add a bit more fat, take out some protein if necessary, all based on what foods you like from the acceptable foods list and on what foods you usually eat. To add more fat, you can do it for example by adding more oils, butter, avocados, olives, fattier meat cuts, cream (limited during Induction) to your current menu. You may need to decrease your protein intake too, depending how much you increase your fat and on how much you need to eat to satisfy your hunger.

Forgot to add. Most of your net carbs should come from vegetables, so you need to choose your three cups of veggies wisely.

Hmm... I should probably go to bed, looks like I can't keep it in one post.

                          Adding...

If you go to the "Review My Menu" forum, you can find menus posted by other members. Those might give you some meal ideas too.

The Website you are talking about is run by the company that makes the Atkins products. They make their money from selling these products. They have the right to use the Atkins name to brand these products. They have changed the diet and they really recomend you using their brand. But as people here have said. We find that not all people can use these products. I tried the shake during induction and had to give it up. Now those products are for emergency only.

Drink plenty of water and use whole foods. Take supplements. That is what Dr. Atkins wanted you to do.
