  • I'm New and Excited but have questions!

    Hey everyone,
My name is Kyla and I am a newbie! This is my first time here. I am excited. I have to loose 65 pounds. On average, how long does this take? I have overweight for the last 10 years, and especially after having my baby 9 months ago. I am really excited to loose this weight and be able to say, I will NEVER look like that again! Does anyone have any tips on how to make the induction easier? And I would also LOVE to hear peoples success stories! I need encouragement and motivation and there is none better than seeing that others can do it too! Thanks. Kyla.

Weight loss rates are different for everyone. Generally you can expect to lose 10-15% of the weight you want to lose during Induction. Then it will slow down a bit and maybe even stall for a couple of weeks before you lose again. That's normal.

Weight loss rates are affected by your gender, age, medications, exercise and fitness level, the aount of water you drink and how closely you follow the plan.

    Some tips are:
    1) Stay off the scale until the 14 days are up because you will seesaw.
    2) Drink lots of water- plain water.
    3) Use sparkpeople or fitday to log your food and exercise. You can check everything from nutrition to carb grams to fiber to percentages (you want 65% FAT, 30% PROTEIN and 5% CARBS)
    4) Really prepare yourself to commit fully with no cheating during those first two weeks
    5) Rid your house of temptation, shop and stock your pantry with legal foods and always have cooked chicken, tuna salad, deviled eggs - something- legal in the fridge for when you burst into the house starving and don't have the patience to make something.
    6) and this is the biggest - Read the book before you start.

    GOAL ONE 228
    (take 2)
    GOAL TWO 213 (personal goal)
    GOAL THREE 199 ONE-DERLAND
    FINAL GOAL 165

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

      Welcome to the board, Kyla!

Do you have the 2002 edition of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution? It's the one we use here and it's a must read. You can get one on Amazon.com at a decent price.

Be sure to check out the Before and After forum for success stories and motivation. Good luck to you!

Re: I'm New and Excited but have questions!

Hi -- you've already been given a lot of great info so I'll just add a little more. The amount you loose depends on you -- we can't tell you what to eat or how much or when....your body is different than anyone else's but if you are cheat free through induction you'll do fine.

Here is a thread that will give you loads of information to be able to follow the plan correctly. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people – you can use them further up the Rungs but not to begin with. If it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

Crystal Lite, sugar free teas, sodas, latte’s, smoothies - these are not acceptable – PURE water is the only thing that counts toward your daily water intake.

Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
        Filtered water
        Mineral water
        Spring water
        Tap water

After your 64 ounces you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
        Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
        Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (causes weight stall in many people)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons
*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.
Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

Exercise is mandatory ….. no excuses - start today! Many of us weren’t active before Atkins – once you get going you’ll find it’s so easy to carve out time each day to walk, run, swim or whatever you choose to do! Take a walk one day, do some light weight training the next day…shake up your routine so your body doesn’t get use to the same thing.

Look at all the delicious foods you can make while you’re eating this way – vary your meals so you don’t get bored with the same thing over and over.

Re: I'm New and Excited but have questions!

Hi & welcome! One thing to consider to make induction easier is to cut out sweets altogether - even splenda. Some of us find that sweet tastes make us crave more sweets

Check out the celebration forums for inspiration when you feel like cheating - I've found that really helpful!
