  • Newb Alert!

    Hey everybody!

I'm giving this atkins thing a go, as I've seen it work miracles on friends of mine that had 100+ pounds to go, and watched them melt away and jump in to healthy lifestyles.

i tried induction for maybe a week, but gave in, and found myself on the slippery slope back to the beginning. I joined this forum when I started, but decided to try it for real this time.

All of you have such encouraging and amazing stories! I took the time to look through the pages and pages of "Before and After" photos and, let me tell you, some amazing stuff!!

I only hope that I can have the willpower so many of you do.

Oh, and a little about me, uhhh, i'm a college graduate as of a month ago looking for a job... and I just gave up smoking as of 2 weeks ago. On top of that I decided it was time for some physical changes as well. It's time to grow up--I'm not in college anymore! Ha! But I want to do this for me, for my future husband, and for my hurting self confidence.

Glad all of you are here to talk to. Can't wait to see what happens with this diet...

        Re: Newb Alert!

Hi and welcome to ADBB. I’m one of the Spotlight Hostesses. Here is a little information I hope will help get you started. We follow the 2002 DANDR book it would be very beneficial to buy a copy so you know what you’re doing. (check www.half.com or www.amazon.com for a cheap copy - mine was under $5.00 with shipping).

Being overweight is a cureable disease -- it doesn't require surgery, special pills or potions. You said "I'm giving this atkins thing a go" - this is a Way of Eating (WOE) not a diet, it is a journey you have to do for yourself, no one can do it for you, so you need to be in the right frame of mind. When you feel the urge to quit induction ask why? Why don't you want to be healthy? Why do you want to stay with the same old excuses you've been using? Once you WANT to loose weight it will be easy for you. As I said it's something you have to do by yourself, but we're all here to guide you and give you help whenever you want it.

*Before you start take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of induction - there are too many variables daily and hourly that can cause your weight to change, so weighing at the end of induction is what Dr. Atkins suggested.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added ***– see below for more info).
        *Take your supplements and exercise
*Stay away from the shakes and bars (they aren’t legal on induction) and any processed or chemically enhanced foods – we eat whole foods.

Check the stickies (information posts) at the top of this page – it’s a condensed version of the DANDR book. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
        Filtered water
        Mineral water
        Spring water
        Tap water

*** Crystal Lite, sugar free teas, sugar free kool-aid & diet sodas do not count they are chemically enhanced and most include aspartame (also not allowed on Atkins) – PURE water is the only thing that counts toward your daily water intake. If you need a “flavor” in your water float a lemon or lime slice on top of your water

The recipe sites are a helpful way to make your meals more enjoyable – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

thanks for your kind words everyone!

question: can you have caffeine for a clean induction? As I understand there is a debate...

I love my black coffee with creamer in it (the full fat low carb kind, of course) with a splenda packet or two...

I've been on induction since I posted, and I actually have been feeling quite confident and excited at the small changes I've noticed, way of living you bet! It's great!

Although getting all that water in is hard, ha

                Re: Newb Alert!

Coffee is tricky. Atkins did tell us to avoid it. So when I did induction, I just did decaf. I have since learned that coffee does trigger a hunger response in me - I am so glad I have discovered this.
Creamers are horrible things. Have you read the ingredient list? Full of things nobody should eat. Use full fat cream if you want cream. And be very careful with those sweeteners.
Good work on your induction. And don't forget that induction is just the beginning.
