  • Ready to Regain my Life Back

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Randi and I'm ready to get back to the old me. I am 46 years old, I was skinny all my life till i hit 40, than I went from a nice 130 to 172 in the last 6 years. Now I must tell you that at 42 I was DX with breast cancer and went through 18 months of treatment and I'm fine today. Next month I am having my thyroid removed due to cancer. So i have a challenge in front of me for sure.

I look forward to getting to my goal of 140 by December of this year.

Oh and I also stopped smoking 3 weeks ago!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ready to Regain my Life Back

Wow -- you are going through a lot but you'll do fine. I stopped 3 years ago on July 4th so I'm still celebrating that...good luck on the thyroid surgery and congrats on the breast cancer being under control!! You will find many cancer survivors here to help you along the way (myself included).

Here is some information I hope will help get you started. If you ever need anything we're all here to help you!

We follow the 2002 DANDR book it would be very beneficial to buy a copy so you know what you’re doing. (check www.half.com or www.amazon.com for a cheap copy - mine was under $5.00 with shipping).

*Before you start take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of induction - there are too many variables daily and hourly that can cause your weight to change, so weighing at the end of induction is what Dr. Atkins suggested.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added ***– see below for more info).
    *Take your supplements and exercise
*Stay away from the shakes and bars (they aren’t legal on induction) and any processed or chemically enhanced foods – we eat whole foods.

Check the stickies (information posts) at the top of this page – it’s a condensed version of the DANDR book. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

*** Crystal Lite, sugar free teas, sugar free kool-aid & diet sodas do not count they are chemically enhanced and most include aspartame (also not allowed on Atkins) – PURE water is the only thing that counts toward your daily water intake. If you need a “flavor” in your water float a lemon or lime slice on top of your water

The recipe sites are a helpful way to make your meals more enjoyable – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

      Hi Randi
Sounds like you have decided to take charge of your life. I like it.
I assume your doctor has talked to you of what meds to take with the removed thyroid to keep metabolism going. Good luck to you and I look forward to hearing more about your journey.
