  • Need a Little information Cleared up for me.

I apologize in advance for rambling.

I am totally new to the site so I was looking for a little advice.
I will start by saying I am a fully recovered Binge-eater(amazing how food can just take over your life). I went from about 170 pounds at 5"8 to almost 275 pounds in less that two years. I thought for sure as soon as i overcame my eating disorder and ate normally again, the weight would just fall right off, It sure didn't. Im only 22 years old so pipe dreaming like that was to be expected. Now After reading countless books and trying numerous diets I am still as fat as ever! I stumbled upon atkins, which seemed like a healthy lifestyle approach.

So. I began to read Dr.Atkins books, smart man, I must say. I hear soo many people saying, "I go to Mcdonalds and Just eat the Hamburger patties plain". I know Dr. Atkins advises against proccessed meats, and added sugars and nitrates. How do these people lose weight buy eating these things?
I am so tired of hearing people tell me, ("Atkins) is great I can eat all the meat I want", and they go on to tell me that they had 2 baconators from wendys, just no bun or condiments. I realize that now, lean meats are advised, but it seems no one quite follows that rule. I suppose that maybe some people really stretch the guide lines.

    Hello, welcome to ADBB.

We are advised to eat approx. 30% of our calories from protein on induction and not to eat unlimited amounts.

With regards to sugar in meats it's a definite no-no, you need to stay away from any food that contains sugar and you are right that several deli meats do have added sugar.

With regards to nitrates - it is advised to buy nitrate free bacon if possible but it is not always possible to source. If you are able to find it then that is great.

I am not sure exactly what you wanted clearing up. I agree that this way of eating is not a licence to eat as much as you want of meat and cheese which is a common misconception.

      Hello, Cupcake.

The burgers at McDonalds have no sugars added. They are 100% beef, without fillers, additives or extenders. They are seasoned just with salt and pepper. Partially hydrogenated cottonseed and soybean oils are used in cooking, which we all know are far from being the best choice from a health point of view, but in terms of weight loss a McDonalds hamburger should not cause problems.

While Dr. Atkins wrote that meat cured with nitrates should be avoided, his concern was from a health standpoint---there is no reason why nitrates would affect weight loss. Furthermore, since DANDR 2002 was published, research has shown that nitrates in cured meats might not be the big bad guys we all thought they were.

I realize that now, lean meats are advised, but it seems no one quite follows that rule. I suppose that maybe some people really stretch the guide lines.
Dr. Atkins did not distinguish between fatty and lean meats. The "lean meats" advice was added by Atkins Nutritionals after Dr. Atkins' death and appears nowhere in DANDR 2002, which is the book we go by at ADBB.

          Fat is food.

My impression is the whole "lean meat" slant is a misguided attempt by the Atkins bunch to bury the hatchet with the low fat mentality crowd.... nothing more.

I don't think hamburger patties, particularly the 'all beef' kind, is what Dr. Atkins meant by processed meat. Deli meats (most), hot dogs, etc that are made in a factory & have all kinds of unpronounceable ingredients in them are much more processed.

              Thanks for everyone's support

I truly appreciate everyones input, and for the warm welcome. I suppose the reason Have questions that seem silly, is the fact that the program seems to simple and utterly fool proof if you follow it correctly. Maybe It just seems to good to be true, and I will surely fail... But here goes day 1!

                Welcome.

Sometimes I eat lean like chicken and fish and lean beef and other times I eat chuck and fattier cuts of beef or salmon or even bacon! But be sure to follow the other dietary rules and get your veggies and know your other sources of protein. It isn't all about meat!

To be successful you need to be in the right frame of mind. If you feel you will fail you probably will. There are plenty of us here who live this plan everyday and believe in it. It needs to be followed the way it's written for you to be successful. Go here Before And After Pics - Atkins Diet and see the people who believed in themselves.

                  Good luck to you.
