    Re: Stalling from day one!

It's been said too many times but:
    More. Calories.

Your body can't live on 900 calories a day.

      Re: Stalling from day one!

I'll try, I just don't know how to get over the sick feeling. Also I get a bit confused as on some low carb places they say you lose weight on low carb diet because you eat less. Then people say less calories do more is how to lose weight. I don't know who is right? What if I stuff myself with fat and get even fatter!
My menus don't look that different to the examples I've seen. Could fitday be wrong in adding up calories?

        Re: Stalling from day one!

I think when articles talk about eating less calories, they are referring to people who once ate a double cheeseburger with all the toppings, a side of large french fries with a mound of ketchup, and a jumbo (sugary) Pepsi. If all you eat is the double cheeseburger (without the bun), you're getting less calories. They weren't talking about someone who ate 1,000 calories a day eating even less now.

FitDay could be wrong depending on whether or not the food choices you are picking accurately reflect what you are eating (both in portion and specific food item). Pick an Atkins friendly food you like and eat more of it, if not all in one sitting, then perhaps by eating smaller portions more frequently.

As I believe was already mentioned in this thread, initially you may gain weight since your body may not "believe" the new, higher calorie diet is a permanent change. But after it gets used to the idea of not having to horde the few calories it once got, your metabolism should bounce back and begin to lose; slowly at first and then with more steam. Of course, if you eat 1400 calories tomorrow and then go back to 900 the next day, it will all be for naught.

try meals on the recipe sites to help get your calories up. Eat some of the veggies on the "OTHER VEGETABLE" list -- they have more carbs and more calories.

I take the coconut oil and mix it with just a 1/4 teaspoon of sugar free cocoa, a packet of splends and spread it thinly on parchment paper, put it in the fridge and wait until it freezes -- it's wonderful and a great way to get the extra oil in my system. Some people eat it by the spoonful or put it in their coffee & tea -- I just didn't like that so I do the frozen "treat" instead.

              Re: Stalling from day one!

When my coconut oil comes in the post I might try mixing it in the the mayo perhaps, I'm not really an artificial sweetener fan.
I was wondering while my loss is still so slow should I still stick with this extended iinduction? Last week or so I've been doing about 16 carbs.
I went out for dinner the other day, it was a great restaurant for low carb. I had pigeon and caeser salad (I left the croutons) and steak with a bit of wilted spinach. Sadly I can't afford to go there very often.

I don't like to rain on people's parades but Coconut oil is a MCT. I read somewhere, which I'll probably start a new tread on when I have time to do the research, that MCT's can sabotage your fat burning if you are eating according to AD or a high fat / low carb diet.

This is where I get so confused with this diet! There's alot of contradiction, I'd read lots about coconut oil helping on low carb, upping the calories..then I read calories don't matter, that you lose on low carb because of low calorie (although I'm eating more calories now than when I put on weight eating normally).

                    Re: Stalling from day one!

My experience is that I need about 25 carbs a day to lose weight. Any less than that and I just sit there for days. When I moved in to OWL, Rung 1, more veggies, I dropped more weight. Good luck to you, though. This must be very frustrating.

I also eat several times a day even when I am not hungry. I might boil an egg, but I will add a bit of mayo or ranch dressing or bacon crumbles to up the carbs. I don't eat enough to get sick. I don't have an appetite much either due to ketosis, but yes, you have to eat.

                    1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
                    rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
                    rung 4 - berries, melon
                    rung 5 - wine -
                    rung 6 - beans, hummus
                    rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
                    Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range

I have wondered about adding more carbs as I've read in a few places hypothyroid people sometimes need more carbs to lose weight.

I got it from the library but had to take it back now. I feel bad enough spending on special food to go buying the books too. I didn't really expect to do it for this long! When I read how much people lose on just induction I thought I'd do it in a month. I know that's silly now.

Eric (Greeneggs&ham) already explained you what's the deal with eating less calories on low carb diets. Ketosis decreases appetite, so it will help people who used to eat more calories than they needed previous to Atkins decrease their calories down to a "normal" level. However, your caloric intake at the moment is not too high, and it's not even normal --- you are eating way too little! There is research showing that low carb, low calorie diets affect thyroid hormones, so you are doing yourself more harm than good.

If you are not hungry, increase your caloric intake by making every bite more nutritionally dense. Instead of eating a boiled egg, fry it or make an egg salad with mayo. Add a dressing to your salads. Make a cream soup. Add butter on top of cooked veggies. Or use cream and butter in cooking, for e.g. in fauxtatoes. This is one of Kent's videos, showing how to make fauxtatoes: YouTube - Atkins Diet Recipes: Fauxtatoes

Milk is not allowed before OWL Rung 2. You can substitute milk with heavy cream (double cream, as you know it in the UK). This will also increase your fat intake, hence calories.

You say you've been eating about 16 carbs. Are these net carbs or total carbs?

When were your thyroid meds last titrated? When the titration was done, was your doctor aware of how little you are eating? Were you eating all the veggies you are eating now when the titration was done?

My advice would be to move to OWL Rung 1 and add 5 net carbs of vegetables to your Induction menu. Because you have been eating so little for so long, I would not be surprised if you suffered from certain vitamin/mineral deficiencies. This could affect your weight loss. So when you add more veggies in OWL, the extra vitamins and minerals should help correct, at least slightly, any deficiencies you might have. Are you taking a multivitamin? Check with your doctor to see if you need any additional supplements.

I'm glad that your realize that using this way of eating as a way to drop weight quickly is silly. This is not a diet per Dr. Atkins. "It is a way of eating for the rest of your (healthy) life" He also states "By doing Atkins you will control your weight, achieve good health and help prevent disease."
This comes directly from Chapter 1.

Look in thrift stores/second hand stores for a copy of the book. You'll be able to get if for next to nothing. A great investment!

                              Good luck on your journey.

Oh yes I've been adding mayo and dressings, very odd as I used to feel guilty for eating too much of it!
It's total carbs, I've been using fit day so just been going by that.
I had bloods done 2 weeks ago and my TSH is 0.68 so that really shouldn't be holding me back now so they've kept me on the same dose.
I could be lacking in minerals anyway thanks to bowel disease, which has improved alot on this diet, probably only reason I've stuck with it so long with so little loss! Annoying thing is people usually can't put on weight with bowel disease.
I'll make an effort to add more butter and things to food.
It is odd to me, I don't feel like I'm eating too little at all, if anything I feel like I'm eating too much!
