  • I need advice

Hi guys..my name is Mo and i started induction 4 weeks ago. I've been following it to a tee! The first 14 days i lost 8 pounds. I decided to do induction longer and now on my fourth week and i've only lost 2 additional pounds. I don't know if it's because i'm 47 and perimenopause. I am in lipolysis but the weight seems to be coming off very slowly.I still have 30lbs to reach my goal and have been considering doing the fat fast but i'm not sure if it's right for me. Please help and let me know what you guys recommend!! Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to !

Quite a big part of the weight one loses during the first two weeks of Induction is water weight lost as your body is burning through the glycogen stores (glycogen is stored with water). Now that you don't have that water anymore, you are losing mainly fat. It's perfectly normal to go slower!

I understand you started with 40 lbs to lose. And lost 8 lbs in your first two weeks. Is this right? That puts you at an average to low degree of metabolic resistance. You also don't have a lot of weight left to lose (30 lbs is not a lot, although it might seem that way to you). So given all these, there is no reason why you should extend your Induction. Dr. Atkins considered it would be appropriate for people without a high metabolic resistance and without much weight to lose to move to OWL after the first two weeks. Some people also lose better when they add some extra veggies as part of their OWL Rung 1. Plus, it is important to move to OWL now, so that you have time to go through all the phases of the program and learn how to maintain your weight by the time you reach goal.

The Fat Fast. Dr. Atkins warned that it is dangerous for those who are not very metabolically resistant. Since you have a low to average resistance, you are not a candidate for the Fat Fast.

10 lbs in 4 weeks is great! That 25% of the weight you had to lose. All in 4 weeks! I think you're doing great. Move to the next phase, add 5 net carbs of veggies to your Induction menu and take body measurements too.

    Happy OWLing!

Thanks for your advice and support..I did start with 40lbs to lose but i made a mistake. I lost 6lbs in my first 2 weeks instead of 8 for a total of 8lbs in 4 weeks. Do you still think i should start owl now or do induction a little longer?

6 lbs is very good too. That puts you exactly at an average metabolic resistance. Yes, I'd still say OWL. Re-read Chapter 14 in DANDR 2002 and the stickies in the OWL forum to make sure you're doing things correctly. This is the link to the OWL forum: Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) - Atkins Diet

Looks like we are about the same age and in the same situation.
I have lost fine. Slow at times but at this age I am not really in such a hurry. I am concentrating a lot about finding out how to keep my weight down now.
You can share a menu with us and we can see if there are some improvements to be made. Adding some exercise is good to for so many reasons.
And yes moving up and eating more vegetables helps many.

A few things to work on.
Only three sweeteners a day. Full cream is better than half and half
Make sure you eat enough - especially enough fat. Use fitday as a tool to keep an eye on things.
Beer? Hmmm not going to figure in as legal till later.

                Re: I need advice

Are you on any medications that might be slowing your weight loss? The older we get the slower the process of loosing - so while the 20 and 30 year olds are having fat falling off them we don't have that luck...we struggle to get each pound off.

Like Liv said there are things you need to change in your daily menu -- beer isn't allowed until Rung 5 .... a long time from now.....moving on to OWL Rung 1 and adding an additional 5 net carbs of veggies is what got my weight loss going after induction. I thought, like you, that I would stay on extended induction to loose weight faster.....it didn't work. When I did add the extra veggies my weight loss started -- slowly yes, but I have lost more than I would have with any other weight loss program and I've never felt hungry or deprived.

I'm Type 2 diabetic and also take medication for high blood pressure, high triglicerides and high cholesterol.....that all contributes to a slowing in my losses.

                Good luck.
