  • Hello all!

Hi! My name is Jolene and I hail from ND - as you can probably tell from my user name! I have a wonderful 4 year old son who needs his mama to be around for a long time - which is why I'm doing Atkins. I'm about two weeks into Induction - going to stay on it for awhile yet because I have a lot to lose and because I'm not having any issues with the restriction on carbs. I actually don't own a scale so I'm not sure what my current weight is so I put the weight I saw on the scale the last time I weighed myself which was about five days in. I know, I know - I'll go out and buy a scale! So although I don't know what my weight is at, I do know that I feel wonderful! When I woke up on the second day of Induction, I felt the best that I have felt in forever! I have had so much energy and I haven't had any cravings. I feel so good that I can't imagine eating carbs now! I know that I haven't lost enough weight for this to make sense but I swear my feet and back feel so good - I used to have foot and lower back pain that made it really hard to even stand for very long but for the past two weeks, since about the second day of Induction, my foot and back pain are gone! I know I probably sound crazy but it's true and I'm not delusional enough to think that I've lost enough weight that I've taken the pressure off my body but I wonder if the carbs were making me ache...?

I've incorporated walking into my daily routine since I seem to have energy for days - I hope to start doing pilates again really soon!

    Re: Hello all!

Greetings, NoDakMama, and congratulations on an awesome start. It sounds as though this WOE really agrees with you. I can relate to that. I feel better eating this way, too.

And good for you for getting the exercise going right away. You'll be glad you did that as you progress.

About 13 months, with one month in the middle slacking. This is why, though, I am glad to see NoDakMama getting a move on right away. I didn't do that for quite awhile.

          Re: Hello all!

I was on day 4, then my 6 year old son made me a small bowl of coco puff cereal. I had to eat it, because he said I would die if I stopped eating. That was about 6 hours ago. I am kind of mad at myself, but he said he would not go to sleep until he seen me eat it.
I never eat cereal and it made my carbs go from 18 to about 90, but I will be back on track in the morning.
I just got back from walking 1 and a half miles at the park across the street.

How many carb get burned while walking?
          Do you know erin?

            Re: Hello all!

I don't really have an answer for that without a lot more information (there are variables involved), but it might be a good question in a new thread, since this is really Jolene's welcome thread.

                Re: Hello all!

Carbs do not get "burned" like calories. You have out yourself out of ketosis by eating so many carbs at once. Now you have to get back into ketosis again. If your little one brings you another carb offering, you need to gently tell him that the food in question is not healthy for your body because your body is different from his and it makes you fat but that you will eat something else in its place. You don't want him to start obsessing over his food, but to eat a food that is bad for you because he wants you to is going to set you back. He can understand that adults and children have different needs, although cereal, if its sugary, isn't a healthy choice for anyone.

If you don't yet have the book, get it. You are making mistakes that will stall your weight loss and frustrate you in the long run. Learning what this way of eating does to your body will help you understand why this choice is an absolute NO in the big scheme of things.

                    Re: Hello all!

                    Welcome to Atkins!!

*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Take your supplements and start an exercise routine today.

The Atkins shakes and bars (as well as other brand names of these products) are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list.

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions! Look at the ingredients list and check it against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it.

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
