  • An Older Newbie

Hello, My name is Michael, I am 64+, I started the Induction phase on July 15. I was 299lbs when I started, yesterday I was at 284.5. I have tried Atkins several times before, for short periods, but was not prepared, so those attempts went by the wayside. This time, I poured over the internet looking for knowledge, I have been home since January when I fell on the ice at work and compound fractured my left ankle, dislocated it and tore the ligament on the right side of the ankle, also damaged my right hip so I cannot move it left or right, just some movement forward and backwards, so I have had lots of time to prepare myself this time, and this time I will stay on a low-carb lifestyle, not a diet but a lifestyle. I have kept my food choices simple, eggs, quality hamburgers (Sirloin), chicken breasts, all meats are cooked on my George Foreman, I make a weeks worth at one time and refrigerate, Romaine lettuce, shredded Cheddar Cheese for sprinking my hamburgers, and string cheese for snack, Mustard and Mayonnaise, Sour Cream, Heavy Cream for my decaf-coffee and to add to my scrambled eggs once in awhile, Diet Rite Colas, lots of water drank out of a 25 ounce cup, I drink at least 3 a day, sugar free Jello for evening dessert. I add 1tsp of pure peppers or garlicy peppers to my eggs, get that at Asian Supermarket, it also keeps me very regular.

    Hi and welcome to ADBB.

We recommend you get a copy of the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) the book we use for reference on this site. Until you can get a copy of the book check the stickies (information posts) at the top of the induction page - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html – it’s a condensed version of everything you’ll need to know. Even through the stickies are a good start they don’t detail the entire program, so that’s why we suggest you have the book to follow.

Post often, ask questions join some of the challenges - the more you use the forum the more you'll get out of it. Atkins is a high fat low carb way of eating so make sure you are getting enough fats into your daily meals. Diet sodas cause stalling in many people so watch drinking them -- we suggest water - water - water!!! Sugar Free jello is made with aspartame (unless it's Hunt's which is made with Splenda) and isn't considered a "legal" things to eat. You should be changing your tastebuds and staying away from sweet things - 3 sweetners a day are allowed - aspartame is not an allowed sweetner. Check the acceptable food list for what you should be eating.
If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions! Look at the ingredients list and check it against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it.

    Before you start:
*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Take your supplements and start an exercise routine today.

The Atkins shakes and bars (as well as other brand names of these products) are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list.

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

      Re: An Older Newbie

Hi stpats, welcome to ADBB. This site uses and advocates the 2002 version of Atkin's New Diet Revolution. It looks to me like you are using an old version of Atkins. You should have three cups of veggies a day ( the link from Carole's post will elaborate further) and you are limited to 3 sweeteners a day. You should also be shooting for 4-5 of those water cups a day if you can do it (it takes a couple weeks to build up to it) You have some good choices otherwise, but the veggies are important and the next stages of the plan, Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) are very different from the older Atkins version. You will get advice from the new version here so if you choose to stay on the old plan, be forewarned you might end up with conflicting advice.

Hi Jill, Thanks for the advise. I am increasing my veggie eating, but I am not sure what 3 sweetners a day means. I started at 299lbs, today I am at 281, on my way to 225. I will read up on the OWl. I am really impressed with your weight loss numbers and I hope I can do as well.

3 sweeteners means 3 equivalents of one packet per day. So if a soda is one serving (many are measured as an eight ounce serving-not a 12 ounce can) then you can have three a day. In your case, 1/2 cup of sugar free jello and 2 sodas a day (although as Carole says aspartame is frowned on). If you find it impossible to give these up just be aware it may slow you down, however some people find it doesn't make a difference in their losses.

              Re: An Older Newbie

Hi Cindi, Thanks for the input, it is always welcome.

At this time, I have 1 Diet Rite Cola per day and 3 small sugar-free Jello's for dessert in the evening. I am going to add more greens starting today, Broccoli goes good with the eggs, also I am adding Tofu, don't want to rush the additions as I am happy with my food selections and my progress.

I went out for dinner last night, 1st time since starting Induction, had Vietnamese food, which included small sausages wrapped in Romaine lettuce and some Shrimp with Broccoli.

              Be good to yourself.
              Michael

                Re: An Older Newbie

I am very happy with my progress, I started the 14th of July at 299 and today the 11th of August I am at 278. I have been looking at the recipes available on this Forum, they are really helpful and spawn new ideas for making something just a little different. I have been looking for drink recipes using coconut milk which I bought yesterday, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Coconut milk isn't allowed until you go to OWL so you will have to wait! What brand of sugar-free Jello are you eating? Jello brand is made with aspartame --- Hunts brand is made with Splenda but make sure you are only eating 3 items with sweetner in it daily....when you have 1 diet rite and 3 jello's that is at least 4 servings daily.
