  • Yah me! 14.8 lbs gone week 1!

I'm sorry I don't have any pics I can post of me at this time. But I will post some in the future when I am home and can get them on here.

Years ago I tried the Atkins diet and gained 9 lbs the first week. I was doing my version of what the diet was, I never went and got a book and I don't think I had a computer at that time to resource any information. Well, I thought I would start on a shake replacement version and went and bought 9 packs of shakes and then started reading this forum and everyone says no shakes. I do have 1 occasionally at work, because sometimes it is too difficult to actually eat food and I'm doing okay with it. The rest of the time it is pretty simple diet....microwave omelet with bacon/sausage and cheese, then a piece of meat and vegetables or salad for the other meals and occasionally some pork rinds.

I actually called my Dr last week to get my diuretics increased because I was getting pitting edema in my legs and feet and walking was getting unbearable, well they wouldn't do it without seeing me and since I'm in Cali right now and they are in WV I said I'd just stick it out until I got home, but they wanted me to go to ER........uh, NO. The next day I went and bought the book and let me say today, my legs and feet look almost normal. Ankles are still swollen, hopefully that will clear up as diet progresses. Has anyone used the supplements Dr A suggests to get off their meds? I am on 3 BP meds...beta-blocker, calcium channel blocker, and diuretic. If anyone has been able to take the supplements successfully please let me know. My Dr quit his practice aand went in to emergency med and now I have this little prick who treats me like crap and the only time I ever got a halfway decent response out of him was 2 months ago when he tried to add an ace-inhibitor to the mix and I ended up in the hospital, again. Yeah, I know, I should find a different Dr, but I travel around the country for work all the time and it makes it difficult to find one when I am home for such short periods of time. Anyway, my point is he doesn't believe in alternative medicine and he doesn't believe in depression and he doesn't believe in my meds making me gain weight.

    Sorry so long!

You are doing great, just watch your sodium since sausage, pork rinds, and bacon are all loaded with it. I buy a low sodium no sugar bacon called Plumrose brand that really tastes like bacon (as opposed to cardboard). Glad the edema is better especially if you are going to be flying.

One positive, many folks find they can reduce and in some cases eliminate some of these drugs after being on Atkins awhile. Hopefully you will be one of those. I would definitely make finding another doctor a priority though. You need someone who listens to you.

Congratulations, that is a great first week!

I would have to say watch sodium also. Pork rinds are pretty salty too. Are you getting enough water in also?

Maybe add veggies and cheese to your omlettes instead of meats? I put broccoli and cheese and then put a little salsa on it like a spanish - very delish!

It looks like this WOE is working for you already! I hope that you can find another doctor, that is so important!

Janet ~ Hello & Welcome To Atkins & The ADBB Forum!!!

Congrats on your 14 pound loss in your 1st week & Keep up the AWESOME work!!!

I was also on HBP & Type II Diabetes Meds when I started the Atkins Program on 1/1/09 & by May 15th,09' Iam off both of them!!!

I did suffer from edema of the legs as well & I stay away from all salt, pork products & salty foods in gereral. I also after doing some reascherch on "webmd.com" asked my Dr to change my HBP meds to one with a Water Pill built~in to it & the problem after a few weeks went away. That may be something that you may want to talk over with your Dr as well as it is a side effect of some HBP & Seperate Water Pills themselves!!!

We have have alot going on around here 24/7 it may be sharing our stories or giving & reciving information & we have a lot of fun in the process!!!

Below I have listed a Link for you with a lot of good information that I have found very helpful & I put it together all in one place to you get started along your way on your Atkins journey!!!

Sounds like you are doing well already -- keep up the great work.
The stickies at the top of the Induction area are a good start they don’t detail the entire program http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
          Recipe Sites
          http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html (Linda’s)
          http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/58513-never-ending-induction-recipes.html (Induction recipes)

*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
          *Take your supplements and
*do some form of exercise daily -- walking, etc..

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions! Look at the ingredients list and check it against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. The Atkins shakes and bars (as well as other brand names of these products) are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list.

If you need anything we’re here to help you!! Good luck.

Re: Yah me! 14.8 lbs gone week 1!

Thank you everyone for the wonderful information. I should have mentioned that my bacon and sausage are turkey products, though I never thought to check the sodium content. You all have succeeded with this program already so well, and I hope that I do half as well as the rest of you. I have already made the decision that this is a life-style change for me, which is of itself quite a feat! Since I usually sulk and just feel like it's so unfair that I can't have this or that when I'm dieting. LOL!

I won't be home until November, so no new Doc til then maybe, and I'm not even sure I can ever get off meds, just hoping. I did the phen-fen thing in '97 and have cardiomyopathy as a result of uncontrolled HTN, during those years. So, I'm a very big advocate of taking the meds with my pts and myself, but if there is a more natural way......I would step right up to that!

Thank you again, I am already checking out some of the links!

Hi! So glad to hear you're doing so well! Could you please post a sample menu of what you eat in a day? I'm at the same start weight, I'd be more than thrilled to lose the same! I had hoped to lose that in a month, if I could do it in a week I don't even know what I'd do! My body has a hard time losing weight, but here's hoping!

Wishing you lots of continued success and big losses!

Re: Yah me! 14.8 lbs gone week 1!

Sure, it's not reaal exciting, though.
Bfast this week I have had: Mock Danish, 2eggs with either sausage or bacon (both turkey products) with cheese microwaved for about 2-3 minutes.

Lunch has been: Atkins advantage shake, egg salad on shredded lettuce with tomato and cucumber slices, angus burger from Mcds without the bun (when I forgot to make something for work), chicken or turkey roll-ups with cream cheese

Dinner has been: Chicken with broccoli, meatballs with cauliflower, salad with chicken strips

I have also had pork rinds when I felt like I wasn't eating enough ( 1 week later I am still eating from the same 3 oz bag) LOL.

I have been forcing myself to drink water, but I just cannot do it without flavoring it, so it has been with diet tea on the go packs and crystal light strawberry-kiwi, diet coke, and Mcds Vanilla iced coffee

Some of these things are not legal from what I have read so far for induction, but I am doing okay with it for now. If I stall, I will change it up.

Hope this helps. My appetite has been pretty subdued, so it has been easier to eat smaller quantities than I usually would, so I am sure this is helping me.

Good luck to you! You can do it!

the things in red are the items NOT allowed on induction. You would be much better off drinking pure water and not putting additional chemicals in your body --

diet coke is made with aspartame (not a recommended sweetner),

the crystal light you are drinking has the following ingredients:

CRYSTAL LIGHT - FRUIT DRINKS - STRAWBERRY-KIWI SUGAR FREE
Ingredients: CITRIC ACID (PROVIDES TARTNESS), MALTODEXTRIN (FROM CORN), ASPARTAME (SWEETENER), CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM (SWEETENER), MAGNESIUM OXIDE (PREVENTS CAKING), ARTIFICIAL COLOR, RED 40, YELLOW 5, BLUE 1.

From the McDonald’s website, these are the ingredients for McDonald’s Vanilla Iced Coffee:

Premium Roast Coffee. Light Cream: Milk, cream, sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate, carrageenan. CONTAINS: MILK. Vanilla Syrup: Sugar, water, fructose, natural (plant source) and artificial flavor, caramel color (with sulfites), potassium sorbate (preservative), citric acid, malic acid. Ice.

I just finished a month of steroids so I am afaid to weigh myself just yet. Good luck and keep trying. Atkins is a great program. I am on Weight Watchers but I do Atkins as my meal plans and keep it within my nmber of points allowed per day. it is working! My clothes feel looser. I am going to weigh in once my first week on Induction is done.

Hi Janet, the advice we give is in keeping with the best DANDR advice but I will be the first to admit that I CAN'T do this as purely and cleanly as I advise others. DO make the effort to drink plain water. But I know sometimes you just want some flavor in it. I use lemon slices and on odd occasions a crystal light pkt. Just try to work away from these over time. As for the shakes---hey when the choice is a shake or a food that is totally off plan, the shake is not a bad choice.

The best course of action is to do this WOE cleanly but not everyone can adhere perfectly. Don't beat yourself up if you can't. Just be aware that it might slow you down.
