  • Hope gave me a ride to this forum

I m a diabetic, vegetarian and am self destructive/counter productive to my own self, health wise. I blew bad on the BG at 428 after a meal yesterday and did not sleep all night. Kept surfing the net and I ended up here.
Given my health condition, I over did alcohol use, get stressed out and I cannot feel my pinky and the ring on my right - got numb but occasionally it gets ok. Need to go to the Doc for my blood work asap. But I believe that I can make use of Atkins diet and try out a change of life style. I did do go when I was diagnosed diabetic - with lifestyle changes on my own, 18 months ago and kept a1c to 5.6
Then I guess the last 10 months I blew. drank, ate irregularly, got depressed generally. I am rising up again today and I hope I get all the support from this wonderful forum. Also, I intend to start my induction on the first of sept, 2009. I hope I get all the answers and get myself mentally tough and be prepared for a new beginning.

      Thanks.
I am looking at a complete change: to develop a multidimensional well being. Not just food, but changes in my profession - my approach to people, forgiving, letting go the past, planning milestones, more ways of supporting my kids in their endeavors, forming a circle of inner strength - for myself and others in my life.
And also, I am very new to Atkins (20hrs!) and I need to figure out whats the best way for me. I did manage once to get to where I need to be , all on my own, only got too complacent and messed up. Once bitten, thats all.

Hello Motley, You are making a lot of changes in a short time so preparing yourself is important. I would suggest your definitely get the book and read it through before September. Then, if you have any questions you can ask before you begin.

HI and welcome -- are you on medication for your diabetes? You may have had your diabetes under control with lifestyle changes in the past but you definately aren't in control now. Before you start Atkins you really should meet with an in endocrinologist or an internist to see how to get your diabetes under control.

Being a vegetarian will make Atkins tougher for you to do but there are other vegans here who may be able to help you.

I agree with Jill that you need the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book (if you can't find it locally check www.amazon.com or www.half.com for a copy). Taking your changes one at a time and getting a handle on each of them instead of jumping in with both feet might be easier on you - but it's your life and you know what you're able to handle.

Below is some information that may help you.

The stickies at the top of the Induction area are a good start they don’t detail the entire program http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html - it’s best to have the book so you know how to follow the program the correct way.

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html. Look at the ingredients list on everything you eat - check it against the acceptable food list -- just because the label says "low carb" doesn't mean it is Atkins legal. Check the ingredients for hidden sugars. The Atkins shakes and bars (as well as other brand names of these products) are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list).

*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
          *Take your supplements and
*do some form of exercise daily – whatever you like and are comfortable doing.

Good luck to you - whatever you decide to do.

Re: Hope gave me a ride to this forum

Atkins is something that would be best started as soon as possible.

One thing that I discovered in eating this way is that so many other things that I felt were related to character flaws on my part were completely changed when I started Atkins. I am no longer even remotely obsessed with food and have no problem whatsoever with willpower anymore. I know Atkins is not like this for everyone, but it has been truly life altering for me.

I was a vegetarian for 16 years and I believe that eating that way made me fatter and fatter. I was always hungry even though I had just eaten, and spent hours at the gym exercising off all of those carbs. I have no regrets about eating meat again. My sister became vegetarian recently and she is doing nothing but gaining weight.

Anyway, all the best to you
