  • Starting back up very excited!

When I was in high school my Mom had bough Mr. Atkins book and one day I decided to sit down and give it a read. Having always been a meat lover I figured this was a diet I could really stick to. It worked for me almost right away, I think at the time I weight about 210 and within several months I was down to about 170-175. I maintained this weight for most of H.S., but once I headed off to college and started consuming mass amount of beer and dorm food my weight slowly crept up to what it was before and soon enough I was in the 230 range.

I've tried several other diets (and I'm an active person, either at the gym or hiking, etc.) and nothing seemed to work. I don't know why, but I sort of forgot about Atkins. Well, recently I was at the store and picked up a new copy of the book and it has me totally excited to be on the diet again. I remember how the pounds melted away before and I'm ready to do it again.

So I'm on my 4th day of induction, already feeling the boost of energy and very excited to start losing some weight (even in my first 4 days I've gone frmo 235 to 230). I think I will do what I did last time and stay in an extended induction for a few months as eating about 20g grams of carbs each day doesn't really bother me. I remember the first time getting past the first few weeks and all of the sudden those carb cravings were gone, replaced by an almost reversed thought process of seeing every carb as evil! I stumbled upon this forum on accident, but it seems like a great support group and I really enjoyed looking at the 'before' and 'after' forum. I can't wait to hopefully post up some pictures of my own soon!

Anyways, nice to meet all of you as I look forward to embracing the low carb lifestyle again!

    Hi and welcome to ADBB.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) I hope that's the edition you have. Since you don't have that much to loose don't stay on extended induction too long -- you'll need time to go through the rungs slowly to find the foods you can and can't eat after you get to the maintenance portion of the plan. Don't forget to eat your veggies and get enough fat!

If you need anything we’re here to help you!! The moderators are excellent sources of anything and everything Atkins and they enjoy helping everyone. Good luck to you!

I just checked and it looks like I do have the 2002 copy. I remember thinking it was a little different than the previous version I had read, kind of new and improved.

So you don't recommend for me to be on induction too long? Well, maybe I will do a month of induction and then go on to phase 2 from there. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Starting back up very excited!

Hi Nick, the OWL rungs will teach you how your body reacts to each food as you reintroduce it. This process takes time if done right and gives you your blueprint of things to eat/avoid in maintenance as you go. Also many people find that they get stuck in Induction and the weight loss slows to a crawl. OWL often shakes things up and gets the weight loss moving again. It also adds nutrients and fiber back with each rung so that it is easier to meet your daily needs.

Having said that, I think a month on Induction will be fine. We usually recommend OWL because many folks stay on Induction far too long and when they get close to goal they havent learned how to maintain. They usually end up back here having regained the weight.

Re: Starting back up very excited!

I went from 235 to 226 back in april, Then finals came around, I got stressed out and quit.

I restarted the first week of july at around ~228-230 lbs and I'm now down to 202 as of 5 days ago. Waiting a few more days to weigh myself, but hoping to be under 200!
