Im Ferret. I've been very successful on Keto diets in the past and am on Atkins to get myself back on track. It has alot of additional choices that my other keto plan didnt which I hope allows me do this with less stress and without the shotgun effect when Im done.

In 4 days, I've knocked off the water weight and am 10 lbs into this. I feel good and am very excited about the opportunity. I love the structure and rules of this.

Im trying to figure out if Atkins has a threshold for the grams of sugar per day ( we know that there is some in veggies too!) and if Sugar free jello is ok or not.

    here's to great things... fast!

    Re: Introduction

    Welcome to the Board, Ferret.

Personally I hope you will never be done with Atkins, because Atkins is not a diet but a way of eating for life. I'm not sure if you had time to read the book already (if not, make some and read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002), but Atkins has four phases: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance.

We are not counting grams of sugar on Atkins, but net carbohydrates, i.e. total carbohydrates minus dietary fiber and minus sugar alcohols*. The limit on net carbs is set by the phase you are in (max. 20 g during Induction) and by your CCLL and CCLM. You can read more about this in the sticky threads of the "Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL)" forum and in the FAQs forum.

Sugar free Jell-O is sweetened with aspartame. Dr. Atkins observed that a significant percentage of his patients who had problems losing weight we're actually stalled by aspartame. This is why he told us to avoid aspartame whenever possible. You can make your own jelly using unflavored gelatin, a "legal" sweetener and some flavoring of your choice. Keep in mind that sweeteners (incl. packets of sweetener and sweetened foods) are limited to 3 servings per day.

    * Different people metabolize sugar alcohols differently and some of us need to count them towards our net carbs. My advice would be to avoid sugar alcohols, especially during Induction.

      Re: Introduction

      Hi and welcome to ADBB.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR). At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condenced version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html. Even through the stickies are a good start they don’t detail the entire program, so that’s why we suggest you have the book to follow.

*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Take your supplements and start an exercise routine today.

The Atkins shakes and bars (as well as other brand names of these products) are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list. Also foods containing aspartame are not allowed as they have been found to slow weight loss in Dr. Atkins patients (and also on many people here on this site).

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions! Look at the ingredients list and check it against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Count "net carbs" not whole carbs (carb minus fiber = net carbs).

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
