  • Hi - My name is <<insert name here>> and I'm a Carboholic...

...when was the first time you remember battling with your weight? For me - it's been a struggle since before I can remember, as I've always had people telling me I was overweight and needed to lose weight. Looking back at pictures of myself, I now realize these insensitive people were the root cause of my nutritional downfalls as I was completely NORMAL looking. I was taller then the other kids, and sure I had a few extra pounds on me, but for all intents and purposes I was completely healthy, and very active.

It is my belief that parents have complete control over their children until they leave the house - after all, they are the ones purchasing food, making meals, and giving spending money. I know I have control - and I will continue to exert it until my children leave my home, and then all I can do from then on is hope they continue on the path of healthy eating and healthy living.

However, I don't think that my children will follow my words if I continue the path I am on right now. I fear they will follow my actions instead, and I need to change not only for my own health - but theirs as well.

Just recently, my mother (weighing in at 280 lbs) resorted to Gastric Bypass surgery. She feels it's the best thing she's ever done to lose all the weight she needs to lose. I am now being bombarded constantly to have it done as well. I have nothing against people wanting to get the surgery done for themselves, but I don't see how it's teaching her healthy eating habits. All I see is smaller portions of unhealthy foods being shovelled into her mouth. Yes - she's lost over 100 lbs now, but how long will it last for? Of course the chronic gagging and dumping and constipation sure aren't award winners in my book.

So - here I am - ready to embark on a new journey to healthier living. I feel that the Atkins diet is my way to benefit from losing weight and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.

Hi and welcome. If you follow the plan the way it was written you'll loose the weight you need to without resorting to surgery and you won't be hungry in the process. If you have any questions we're here to help. Here is a little information to help get you started.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR). At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condenced version of the book - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/5781-before-you-begin-atkins-nutritional-approach.html. It would be best to have a copy of the book for reference.

The foods we eat are simple -- if a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food don’t eat it. Look at the ingredients list of everything at the grocery store and check the ingredients against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. We count "net carbs" not whole carbs (carb minus fiber = net carbs).

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

      Hi WetBannana

I started Atkins today. I have high high hopes.. just hope I can achieve what I have seen in the before and after section of the forum!

I think the worst thing my parents did regarding my weight was teaching me the "Dont leave the table until your plate is clean" thing... Even today, if I am bloated I have always had a hard time not finishing my food!

In fact, I think it has other knock on effects... when my wife and I lived together I think she may have even fed me more because I always finished what she fed me! That I think resulted in her thinking I needed feeding more and more!

Good luck with the journey to weight loss,,, wish me luck too!

I did the same thing with my husband -- if I didn't cook large enough portions to put on the table he would ask for something else to eat -- so I started fixing quantities for 4 - 5 people, there were 3 of us at the table. His daughter thought she should keep up with the amounts her daddy ate so she ended up gaining 20 pounds in a few months. We did manage to get the weight off her before she went back to school for the new year but I always worried about her dad. He had triple bypass surgery 1-23-06 ... 6 years after we were married - his daughter blames me to this day for "trying to kill daddy"....that wasn't my intention

Good luck to both of you!!

Hi Wetbanana. I am with you regarding surgery. I may never get to goal but I will not resort to surgery--its just not the way I want to play it. My weight is MY problem and it is my habits that got me here so I need to learn how to fix it.

You will find this site informative and the support here is tremendous. Welcome to ADBB

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

Thanks everybody for your support and understanding. Starting out is scary in itself, but having a community (albeit an online one) is great for having somewhere to go when you just can't talk about it with other people.

I'm only 29 years old - I have my whole life ahead of me. I look forward to coming back here and sharing how I am doing, and hopefully helping others to realize their full potential as well.
