  • New guy, HooserDaddy

Okay, I'm not really HooserDaddy, it's my alter ego, kinda like Spider-Man is to Peter Parker. My first name is David, Dave, and a lot of times I answer to "Hey You" from my wife.

Army veteran of ten years, Cold War Vet, early-retirement in my mid fifties, former teacher, married twenty five years or so (to the same woman), father of two daughters, 22 and 16, Post Tramautic Stress Disorder (funny how army service, helicopter crashes, and . ..other things sneak up on you) and I'm obese.

I hated that word for years. Hid behind. . ."the wife and I have been married for x amount of years and the only thing that's changed is the letter C. .. .the Hunk is now a Chunk." My joke. It's gone as bad as a Letterman joke about Sara Palin. Not funny.

So, I bought the book about a year ago, put it in my library, and just sat down abut a month ago and read it from cover to cover. Six Foot and 400 lbs is too much, and it's either this or . ..surgery. Forget that. Another embarassing motivator: I had to go onto the roof to replace some shingles that were ripped during a windstorm, and during that little DIY moment, the ladder fell to the ground. I couldn't jump down, or climb down, and I was alone at home. The local fire department came and helped me down after I called my wife on the cell.

It's been two and a half weeks on the induction diet -- I've slipped up a bit when my wife brought home a donut from Tim Horton's she thought I should try -- but it's the only slip up in two weeks. I've taken myself off of the pills, especially the anti depressants (I did it in a weekly reduction of the daily dosages, until I was down to nil). I do think that five years on the stuff added to the problem. It wasn't the only thing, but it sure didn't help.

I'm at that stage where I can say no to soda pops and mean it, Tim Horton's and M & M's. Still kinda hard to say no to the wife. . .but, she's not a carb. The late night walks are getting a lot easier and longer, too.

I'm staying on the induction diet for a bit longer, maybe another two weeks, maybe four more. . .but I can tell it's working. Don't know how much I've lost, but. ..I can tell.

So, let's see if HoosierDaddy can stay on this thing and go from Hunk to Chunk back to Hunk again. . .

      Hi and welcome to ADBB.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR). I hope that's the one you have sitting on your bookshelf. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condenced version of the book - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/5781-before-you-begin-atkins-nutritional-approach.html.

Just remember, if a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food don’t eat it. Look at the ingredients list of everything at the grocery store and check the ingredients against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. We count "net carbs" not whole carbs (carb minus fiber = net carbs).

Tell your wife Tim Horton is off limits for you .... if she wants her "hunk" back she'll understand! My biggest problem was giving up M&M's -- I should have purchased stock in the company because I bought enough bags of them (2 pounders each time!!)

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

I find a good hard exercise session helps boost my mood and my feelings about myself. As you get more mobile, build more exercise in and it will help on a variety of levels. Glad you found that dusty book and finally cracked it open. Welcome to ADBB!

You're on the right track Dave! Good job so far. You can do this.

My husband did the same thing with the ladder, only he stripped down to his underwear and jumped in the pool. STILL! It was dangerous... as a nurse I've taken care of many a head injury/trauma from falls from a ladder. Don't use them when you're home alone! (now if I could get my husband to listen to me!)

good job getting off the anti depressants. Can you walk during the day? I find that my daily walk is a bit like medication for me in that it helps me feel so much better in so many ways... the sunshine fresh air beauty all work together to add to a sense of peace and serinity. Sometimes I calll my 'walk' 'taking my medication'... it helps me be modivated to get out there everyday. It has so many benefits: stabilizing of blood sugar, lowering of Blood Pressure, increasing circulation, mental relaxation to name a few... and hardly any negetives except of course; getting all sweaty and having to a shower... ha ha.

Anyways, see if you can get your wife to read the book and buy into the Atkins way of life (WOL) and way of eating (WOE). That way she'll understand why a little donut does a lot of damage.

Keep it up and don't get discouraged. It is worth it in the end!

Am I walking? Yep. . . I just started last week and haven't missed a day yet. . .. Hopefully I can keep that streak alive.

Thanks guys, I think the forum and the advice found here will be a great motivator.
