  • I'm new to Atkins!

    G'day,
I've never tried Atkins and have been doing most of my research online. I've lost 2.5kgs and I'm in day 8. I need some help with my induction meal menu - so if anyone could look over it and give me some advice I'd really appreciate it.
    B'fast - bacon, eggs, mushroom
snack - sometimes I have jelly - sometimes nothing
lunch - green salad with olives, cucumber, 1/2 green capsicum, feta cheese (Sometimes mozzarella), 1 tomato
snack - small can of tuna - sometimes nothing at all
dinner - meat with salad as I'm not sure about what vegetables I can have?

PS - I'm not getting hungry at all and sometimes I only have 3 meals? Is this ok?

    Thanks
    faraway

    Welcome faraway
    How faraway is far away?
I really recommend the book - it is a good resource so try to find it
Here are some threads in our FAQ that will help you.
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What are the Rules of Induction?)
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)

As for your menu it looks good. But you have to keep some control on the veggies. So when you read the sticky on induction food - make sure you pay attention to what veggies you can eat and how much.
Jello may not be the best snack as the sweetner - aspartame- maybe problematic for some.
And remember to drink plenty of clean water. PLENTY

Looks like a good start. Keep it up

        Re: I'm new to Atkins!

        Hi and welcome to ADBB.

You have some of this information from the people above but it never hurts to get good information again!!

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book -
        http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/spotlight-introduce-yourself/60133-if-you-new-read.html

Make a copy of this list: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Make sure you don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”). We count "net carbs" (carb minus fiber = net carbs) – you can keep track of your daily food on FitDay or another program.

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

          Re: I'm new to Atkins!

Welcome faraway. Your food looks pretty good and snacks are not mandatory but you should not go more than 6 hours without a meal. Eating regularly stokes your metabolism.

Thanks for your comments everyone. Appreciate it. I'll keep at it and hopefully have some fantastic results soon.

PS - I thought faraway would be an appropriate name as I'm from Australia

              Re: I'm new to Atkins!

              Hey faraway!

The menu does not look bad.

Look out for the jelly, make sure its not got sugar in it or that if its sweetened that its not the bad types covered in the forum.

With the mushrooms, I have been having lots of them in the last week, but I do wonder how good or bad they are.

Have you set up a free account of fitday.com? its well worth joining. a bit confusing to start with, just play with it... when you get used to it, it becomes reallys useful to see if your getting enough fat and not more than 5% carbs (or 20g)

I have been on Atkins for a week today and lost about 7kgs, but my diet has had a lot more fat in it than yours and I suspect that eating fats such as butter is actually beneficial from this diet, especially during induction... I think it seems to fool your metabolism into thinking everything is ok and not to go into starvation mode... people here will be able to clarify.

Some people will say do not bother, but I find keto sticks really usefull to know if I have eaten something the day before which has tampered with my success.

Tommorrow I am adding an excercise program to my diary.. ohhhh I am not looking forward to this!

Good luck and well done so far
