Re: 30 pounds to lose! I need support!!!
Hi Matt, My son Paul is in college and he has taken off 50 pounds with Atkins. Its tough to do without exercise so if you can get out and walk or jog a couple miles at least four times a week your weight loss will go faster. Also, keeping it off during your freshman year is tough, but it can be done. Welcome to ADBB!

Re: 30 pounds to lose! I need support!!!
Hi and welcome to ADBB Matt.
We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/spotlight-introduce-yourself/60133-if-you-new-read.html
Make a copy of this list: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Make sure you don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”). We count "net carbs" (carb minus fiber = net carbs) – you can keep track of your daily food on FitDay or another program.
The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Re: 30 pounds to lose! I need support!!!
Hello Matt. Welcome to the board and the world of academia. I gained about 60-65 lb in graduate school because of stress, long lab hours and my personal downfall, beer.Originally posted by Mak1791 View PostHey everybody my name is Matt.. If this helps, my current weight is 205 lb. I started induction May 25th. 2009 at 245 lb. I'm sure I was weighing a lot more before because I stopped drinking booze back in April. I guess my weight was closer to 255-260 lb. Before shrieking, understand that I carried my weight fairly well because I was and currently am into body building. I was into body building probably as long as you've been alive.
You are young, assuming you are at freshman age, so the weight should come off rather quickly. Here's the thing though. The heavier one is, the faster the weight comes off. That is, a 230 lb male may lose weight at 2250 calories per day but a smaller person, say a guy that weighs 190 lb might need to cut his calories down to 1600-1800.
You weigh 180 lb and if you intend on working out while following the Atkins diet, you might find yourself at 160 lb hypothetically after a year's time. It could be very easy for you to lose 40 lb of fat and increase muscle mass by 10 lb simply because right now, at your age, all someone has to do is sneak up behind you, yell Boo!, and you'll release growth hormone. Growth hormone makes you lose fat and helps you gain muscle mass. Your testosterone should be through the roof now and low carbing increases and enhances testosterone.
You'll do great but remember that the first 5-8 days are a bear because you will be switching from a sugar burning to a fat burning metabolism.
Exercise is not an option, if you seriously want to transform your physique. You will lose weight without exercise but the extra activity will add a special quality.
Drink plenty of water, 6-8 8 oz glasses per day at the least and always ask the advise of moderators if you are confused about stuff you read here. Don't drink the water all at once. I could kill you. Drink throughout the day. The moderators really know their stuff here. They are a treasure chest of good information.
Google "Fit Day" and start an account with them. Track everything as Georgiana, a moderator on this forum would say, everything that goes into your mouth.
Get a measuring cup and a food scale. I bought a really nice food scale for about 10 bucks at a local supermarket, called Publix. Also, measure yourself. Measure your neck, chest, upper arms, forearms, waist, hips thighs and calfs. This will give you a good feed back. If you are willing to take it a step further, get yourself a skin-fold caliper. Check your measurements every other week, or so.
If you have any questions post a thread and I'm sure you'll get very well thought out answers. Oh, there's this guy named Norman on this forum. Be skeptical about his posts. He has a tendency of weird thinking and being a bit off in left field.
You can't go wrong on this life style change. The success stories are mind blowing. Also, dabble in the recipes posted here. They are great. Whatever you do, do not try any of Norman's recipes. He can't cook worth a dime.
So welcome and enjoy this forum. Everybody here is like family. I haven't detected any hostility here.
Do yourself a favor and read the book. We use the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. You can fiend a second hand book at a thrift store. You do not have to read the whole book before starting the "Induction Phase." Just read that part, the first 2 weeks and what foods and quantities you can eat. Find yourself a multi vitamin that does not contain iron.
I'm going to tell you a little secret. In dieting and academia there is no such thing as luck. Sucess is achieved by hard work.sigpic Me, at 195 lb. September 24, 2009. It's 5:30 a.m. and can't wait to hit the coffee.
