  • Week three

    Hi,

I've been lurking on this board for about six months. About six weeks ago, I gradually started reducing my carb intake, slowly learning how to eat the Atkins way.

First was getting rid of the bagles, muffins, pancakes and cereals for breakfast in favor of eggs, breakfast meats, and cheese.

Next went the sandwiches, chips, and cookies at lunchtime in favor of tuna/chicken/salmon salads, celery with cream cheese, and carbmaster yogurt.

Dinners weren't difficult - I just cut out the pasta, beans, rice and bread and kept the meats and salads that I already loved to eat.

That process took me about three weeks. Then three weeks ago I began the induction phase in earnest. I am taking vitamin and mineral supplements and making sure I walk 3 miles or ride a bike for 30+ minutes per day, every day. I am using the test strips, and my ketone levels have been steady at around 50-60mg/dL since the middle of the second week or so. The appetite supression kicked in at around the fourth or fifth day. I finally feel like I am in control of what and when I eat - no more cravings and false hunger pangs at all hours of the day and night. This is the biggest gift I could have asked for!

My starting weight was 263 (I'm 6' 0"). I'm at 248 now, and currently losing about 0.5lb per day. I plan to stay at 20 carbs for another week or so - I don't find it difficult and I feel fantastic so I'm sticking with it at least until my wife catches up. She started induction a bit under two weeks ago - although today is her 40th birthday and she insists on having ice cream even if it sets her back. I don't have any problem taking her and the kids to the Marble Slab to celebrate but they'll have to eat it alone!

Based on these first weeks, I do believe I will achieve long-term success with this. I look forward to participating in these forums.

Hey Jarrod, Sounds like you are off to a great start. It wasn't too hard for me to pass up some of the goodies with the physical benefits most guys seem to get in the first few weeks. Good to have another big guy around. Check into the men's forum....it's a ghost town but a couple of us are trying to change that!

Look forward to seeing your progress.

                Re: Week three

Thank you all for the encouragement and well-wishes. The wife is back on track and we spent the weekend updating our recipe file with some new low-carb dishes we are planning to try.

Funny thing is - she broke the diet to have ice cream on her birthday and I am the one who has stopped losing weight! Have not lost an ounce for the last 3-4 days. I know this is normal - I'm not discouraged - I just had to laugh at the irony!

I'm still feeling great - today I am wearing one of my belts that I haven't been able to wear for two or three years....woohooo
