  • Newbie here, Type 2 diabetic and DW is doing this too

Hello all. I just wanted to let you know that this is a great board and has helped me on my way. A little history.

In January of 2009, I weighed 264 lbs. By May 10th, I was down to 210lbs. Before you clap, please understand that I had no idea why I was losing so much weight. Turns out, I am a new onset Type 2 diabetic. On May 21, I was diagnosed, my BS level was 760, my A1C was 14.4. I immediately started cutting carbs and sugars and got my BS levels down to the mid 150 range, but am still insullin dependent. Decided to give this a whirl to become Medication free and lose 45 lbs in the process.

My DW, has given me 2 beautiful children and they gave her an excuse to eat. She is 45 lbs from her goal weight of 115. She is not a diabetic but wants to lose weight and be healthy for her soon to be sexy man! Isnt she great!

    Type 2 Diagnoses - May 21, 2009 (209 lbs)
Atkins Induction start- August 11,2009 (225 lbs)

Average BS reading prior to induction - 150-195
    Average BS since induction- 75-95

Goals- By January 1, 2010 be off all medication and down to 195 LB
By April 21, 2010, my 32 Birthday, weigh 175. This will be less than I weighed when I graduated High School!

    Hi hunny -

    Love you!

Yes I am his DW that is doing this too. I am down to 154 and my goal weight 115. I am down 10lbs but some of that was before I started induction. I am 3 days and and going strong. Although my DH would beg to differ wtih my complaining.

I agree that I have to lose the weight and I want energy again, to fill sexy and to be active without having to huff and puff when I play with my kids.
So I look forward to learning, getting to know everyone, and following their journey.

Edited to add: My goals are to be in a size 6 by Christmas and to be able to run 3 miles by my birthday on Oct 5th

      Hi and welcome to ADBB.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make a copy of this list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

I am also Type 2 diabetic -- I've lost 35 pounds and have lowered my A1C from 10.3 to 5.0 in less than 6 months by following Atkins to the letter. Good luck to both of you --

      Carole

You guys are awesome for supporting each other like this. Keep up the positive attitude and stay focused on your goals - and on each other. You will get there together, no doubt.

It is really terrific to see how Sporty is right in here with a positive attitude and her own set of goals. Congratulations. You two are really an inspiration. Dawgs, I hope you know how lucky you are to have this unconditional support and positive attitude from your wife. Don't take it for granted, and best wishes to you both!

First of all ... I will if I want to! Congratulations on joining Atkins ... good decision.

I want go into my entire history suffice to say I was taking two oral medications for diabetes and insulin twice a day when I began Atkins. Over time, my insulin requirement was less, my doctor reduced and eliminated my oral meds and I know longer take anything for my diabetes. My A1C was most recently 5.9.

This will have a benefit, not only for your own health, but so you can teach your kids about good habits including eating healthily and exercise so that you will all be there for each other for a very long time.

Look forward to hearing about your progress.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

            Thanks everyone.

We definitely have each other's support plus these boards so it is making a difference.

I am finally getting over the induction flu and starting to have more energy. Boy that was rough! But I survived!

I am reading lots on the board, looking up information, recipes etc. I am on day four of my induction and still doing well. NO cheating and the cravings are getting better (I have a big choc side - probably why I am fat! LOL)

            Thanks again for the support.
