  • Hi...another newbie :)

    Good Morning All,

I started Atkins induction last Thursday...to date, I had lost 5 lbs (hopefully a lot more to come). I don't have my stats yet, but SW: 273, CW: 268, GW: 165. I still have the older version of the book so I need to get w/the program but think I have been doing okay so far. I do have a questions, I do drink two cups of decaff coffee a day and use 1 pack of sweetner in each plus liquid sweetner. For cream I use the heavy cream (within the allotted guidelines). Does this sound okay? Also can we chew sugar free gum (with 2 carbs)? Does that count? Thanks!

To answer your questions: we are allowed 3 servings of sweetner daily - so your 2 cups w/a packet of sweetner PLUS liquid sweetner may be too much. Heavy cream is fine for your coffee. When you chew sugar feww gum you are continuing to feed your sweet tooth -- induction is the time to break all ties with sweets and other foods bad for you -- it's best to get off the sugar free gum asap. There are sweetners (probably sugar alcohols) in the gum also.

It's best you get a copy of the 2002 DANDR book - that's the one we follow on this board -- there are many changes from the older book to the 2002 edition and we feel this is the best program to follow.

At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make a copy of this list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Thanks for your reply. Are there any type of breath mints/gums that we can use? I chew for oral hygeine purposes lol. Thanks!

I rarely have hot dogs, but when I do I eat Hebrew National or if I can't get those I buy Nathan's - because there are no fillers in those.

Here are the ingredients in regular Oscar Mayer hot dogs:

Ingredients: MECHANICALLY SEPARATED TURKEY, PORK, MECHANICALLY SEPARATED CHICKEN, WATER, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF SALT, FLAVOR, SODIUM LACTATE, CORN SYRUP, DEXTROSE, SODIUM PHOSPHATES, SODIUM DIACETATE, SODIUM ASCORBATE, SODIUM NITRITE.

Here are the ingredients in Oscar Mayer cheese dogs:

Mechanically Separated Turkey, Pork, Mechanically Separated Chicken, Pasteurized Cheese Product (Cheddar Cheese (Milk, Cheese Culture, Salt, Enzymes)Water, Milk Protein Concentrate, Milkfat, Whey Protein Concentrate, Sodium Phosphate, Salt, Sodium Alginate, Sorbic Acid as a Preservative, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Apo-Carotenal (Color)Water, contains Less than 2% of Salt, Flavor, Sodium Lactate, Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Sodium Phosphates, Sodium Diacetate, Sodium Ascorbate, Sodium Nitrite.

What I'm showing you is there are too many non-induction ingredients in these hot dogs. Spend a little more and get hot dogs with no fillers or additives in them.

As far as mints/candies for oral hygiene reasons, I find brushing my teeth and using mouh wash keeps my mouth fresh. I drink plenty of pure water which also helps keep your mouth feeling clean.

Chewing on fresh parsley is a great breath freshener, too.

Induction does give you bad breath but those 2 carbs each time would add up to a lot!
