  • Giving Atkins a try for the first time.

    Hi there,

My name is Linda, and I'm trying Atkins a try for the first time. There was a program on t.v. the other night about a doctor who tested a diet, basically the Atkins diet, on 100 people living on Vancouver Island. I was amazed, and decided to give it a shot.

I'm the proud mother of two lovely boys. Jacques is 3 and starting preschool next week, and Andre' is 7 months old. My pre-pregnancy weight was 175lbs, and my husband LOVED the way I looked. He thinks 145 might be too low, but I've never been that slim before and would like to see what I'd look like.

I also just want to say that it is rather inspirational to see everybody's before and after photos, and how encouraging everybody is here. Thanks so much!!

I'll upload some photos too once I really start losing weight.

Take care & keep up the good work!

      Hi and welcome to ADBB.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make a copy of this list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

I answered your question about bars and shakes -- they are NOT legal during induction because of the ingredients in them. The Atkins company is not in business to make us healthy - they are in business to make money at our expense. As it says above, make a copy of the acceptable food list - if something isn't on that list you don't eat it. After induction go on to OWL (ongoing weight loss) and climb up the "rungs" adding foods back into your day.

Make sure you are drinking a MINIMUM of 64 ounces pure water (nothing added), take a good multi-vitamin, start exercising today and eat the proper foods -- it's that simple!

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
