hello i am new here and i have a question! i have been on hydroclothiziades(sp) a diuretic for high blood pressure for the last 2 yrs. i believe this has held me back from losing weight. I am on the 4th day of induction and i have gained 1 pound! I quit taking the diuretic 2 days ago as I hear that it may cause a high blood sugar. I have been on this diet in the past and it took me 2 yrs to lose 35lbs! I have also been on phentremine in the past for 6 weeks and only lost 6lbs. anyone have an idea or have dealt with this.???

    Re: new

    Hi Tifnay,

I'm coming back after being away for a while. First I wanted to say congratulations for being on day 4 of induction, that is really great! I am back on day 4 too and it feels really good to have those food cravings going away.

I also have dealt with medications and low-carbing over a number of years. I can remember calling myself the "turtle loser" the first time on the program. But I went from 230 pounds to 127 - 135 and stayed there for almost 7 years. It took me almost a year to get down to 155 with the medications. But, just getting to 155 felt incredibly great to me. Then, in the first 2 months of the next year, I dropped another 20 pounds really fast. However, there were times when I had to make adjustments with my doctors in medications to find out which ones were really fighting with my weight loss and had been a significant factor in my weight challenges.

I would "never" recommend you stop medication without talking to your doctor. The weight will come off it's just slower (I know). But, I promise you... it does come off. I'm still dealing with that challenge in life.

I just don't know how phentremine responds with this WOL (Way of Life). Sorry! Mayby other's can help you with that topic...

I do wish you the best! Stay connected and say hello. I know we can all be successful together! Hugs,

      Re: new

I would say you should talk to your doctor before discontinuing meds and make sure you are drinking enough plain water to prevent your body from holding on to every ounce. You dont want to mess your system up. And losing slowly is still losing. Iam also a turtle. I just recognize that and deal with it.

        Welcome to the Atkins Board.

I have been experiencing slow weight loss because of a couple of my medications but you have to determine if you want to loose quick or loose slowly and keep it off. Atkins isn't a diet to loose a few pounds quickly ... it's a lifestyle change. I agree with Cher, I wouldn't stop taking any medications without my physician knowing about it. Dr Atkins suggested we stay off the scale until the end of induction because your weight will fluctuate from day to day (even hour to hour if you are on the scale over and over during the day). You need to give your body time to get over the jolt of starting a new eating plan, going off your meds, etc. Follow the plan 100% the way it was written and you will have success -- even if it is slowly.

To help get you started on this site: The 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) is the book we follow here. It would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to (www.amazon.com or www.half.com have inexpensive copies). At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin without iron (you should get enough iron with the foods you are eating on Atkins). Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – something for everyone.

Make a copy of this list
(What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
