    Hi everyone.

I am new to the board, but not to Atkins. I was a groupie for a good 30 years, from the time he came out with 'Revolution'. I even called and spoke to him while he was hosting a local radio show, and I planned to someday go to see him at the Atkins Center.

Like many of you, I have had a life-long weight problem. I have even gone to lengths such as having my jaws wired and more recently, gastric bypass (8 years ago). I am back to my pre-bypass weight *sigh* and have had many false diet starts recently.

Thing is, the last couple of times I went on the induction phase of the diet (in the late 1990s), I wound up in the hospital with DKA (I have been a type 1 diabetic for 16 years). When I start Atkins with some carbs now, I gain weight, and I get scared away. I am wondering whether there is any way I can chance induction again. If anyone has any tips for me, they will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    groupie

    Welcome to the Board.

How does a typical Induction menu look for you (include quantities too, not only foods)?

bacon or sausages and eggs for breakfast

whole cheese and deli slices snacks

steak or chicken lunch and dinner with a cup of salad greens

eta: quantity depends on how much I want food at the time (not necessarily whether I'm hungry or not).

Are you following the 2002 Induction plan (DANDR 2002 is the book we go by at ADBB), with 3 cups of vegetables per day (3 cups salad veggies, or 2 cups salad veggies and 1 cup veggies from the "Other Vegetables" list) and over half of your net carbs coming from veggies?

Did you check the ingredients in sausages?

And are you eating approximately 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbohydrate (the percentages are computed of the total caloric intake)?

What do you mean? Do you eat when not hungry, just because you "want food"?

No, Georgiana. I was going on memory, doing the original Induction. I will have to find my Atkins books and review the NDR.

          Thanks for the nudge.

Yes. The ones I eat are okay.

          Not being that technical, yet.

I pretty much lost touch with what it means to be hungry, if you can understand that. Originally, I think we were instructed to eat until satisfied.

            Welcome to the Atkins Board.

You can get a copy of the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR)
here www.amazon.com or www.half.com. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin without iron (you should get enough iron with the foods you are eating on Atkins).

We have a diabetic forum but it's not active enough. I am Type 2 so my experiences will be completely different that yours but if you post around the board you may find other Type 1's who would be able to help you.

Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – something for everyone.

Make a copy of this list
(What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Welcome to ADBB. The 2002 book is the healthiest version of Atkins in terms of balancing your nutrition and teaching good lifelong habits. I find it helps to reread it every so often just to rev up my motivation and jog the memory a bit.
