  • Newbie!

I'm a newbie and thrilled to have found a forum where I can get support and encouragement from others who have struggled with some of the same issues that I am. I have struggled with weight all of my life. After years of struggling I took drastic measures and had gastric bypass surgery. That was only a temporary fix. I lost 160 lbs. About 9 years ago. I kept my weghit off for approximately 2 short years before I began gaining it back. I have now gained back 60 lbs. I also have some health issues that prevent me from participating in strenuous physical activities, so excersise is all but impossible right now. If anyone has any advice please help me! I would appreciate all that you have to offer. This is my last hope. Thanks in advance and good luck to you all!

Imagood1 will give you great information in a few. I can't believe I beat her to this post before she did.

Exercise is important but you still will make great progress while following the Atkins WOE.

I would suggest getting an account with Fit day. You can google it. Keep track of your macro-nutrient split. I believe it is around 60-70% fat, and keep the carbs at about to 3% of your caloric intake. Do not take my word on the percentage split, though, because I'm rattling off this 'fact' off the top of my head. I'm sure someone like JuliaB, Imagood1, or any one of our knowlegable moderators will correct me. Only eat what's allowed during the induction phase. When I started, I thought I was doing Atkins correctly. It took me about a month and posting on this forum to realize that the Atkins WOE is no where near what the media has hyped.

You will lose weight. No doubt.

Also, the moderators on this board are excellent. Listen to what they have to say.

Don't forget to drink water! Plenty of it. At least 64 oz per day.Try, if you can, to stay away from soft drinks flavored with artificial sweeteners.

      Re: Newbie!

      P.S.

This diet is not a high protein diet, but a high fat diet. Counter intuitive? But it makes sense if you read the theories behind a high fat, low carb diet and some of the research.
I was a bodybulider for many years and had to take a prolong lay-off. The Atkins WOE is giving me gains and muscular definition way beyond what I thought possible 15 years ago. No, this is not a body building diet, it can be used as one, but the AD is a fat loss diet. You will lose body fat faster than on any other diet. Yes, it takes time and a life long commitment, but it sure works.

        Re: Newbie!

Thanks so much for the info. I am trying to get aquainted with the INS and OUTS of the "lifestyle". I don't do sodas so that's not an issue. I use Stevia to sweeten instead of sugar. I have been eating very healthy foods for about 15 years but have a big problem with carbs ie... proccessed sugars as well as wheat, fruits and dairy products. Again, thank you for your advice!

I really recommend reading Atkins New Diet Revolution. It is the best source for information on how to do this diet. You need to follow the rules of induction stricktly and go from there. You sound a bit desperate. Don't be. This will work. Just take a deep breath and get into it.

Here are some threads in our FAQ that will help you.

            Re: Newbie!

            Hi and welcome!!

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin without iron (you should get enough iron with the foods you are eating on Atkins).

Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – something for everyone.

Remember to eat only foods on the acceptable food list (Liv gave you the link to it above)> If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water daily -- nothing added! If you can walk that is a wonderful exercise, also water aerobics. You can do upper body strength training with cans from your cupboard. You can do leg lifts while sitting, or do a few squats using your chair.

If you need anything we’re here to help you!! Good luck to you!

            Carole
