  • New not only to Atkins but also to internet groups!

Hey everyone -- As the title says I'm not only new to the diet (this time, anyway) but also new to posting to bulletin boards (is that even what you call them?) Anyway, people on this site seem very nice, supportive and intelligent, and that's all I needed.

I'm 48 years old, married w/ two great daughters (7 & 10) -- I used to be a screenwriter in L.A., but I'm now living in Atlanta and going to law school at night. I love my life, but would love it even more at a healthier weight.

I'm 5'8" and currently 190 lbs. I've done Atkins before, but not for a very long time. I started again two weeks ago, and am kind of frustrated. So far my net weight loss is... 0. Now for the first week I (stupidly) indulged in ketchup and (a small amount of Peanut butter) -- not remembering they're not on induction. This week I'm back, and I believe I'm doing everything right. However I'm not losing, and I can't seem to turn those darn Ketostix purple.

Any advice from anyone out there would be very appreciated, and once I'm rolling I'm really looking forward to helping others. I'm not discouraged, but I am a little mystified, and I just have a feeling that this great group can help.

Thanks so much in advance. SB4 (p.s. please excuse me for being new and clunky at this whole "posting" thing)

Re: New not only to Atkins but also to internet groups!

Welcome to ADBB, SB4! Yes, this is a bulletin board or message board...you have that right. I'm sure the welcome wagon will be along with some great newbie advice.

If you have any technical/Internet type questions, you could post them in the Tech Forum. There are lots of geeky types (like me) who can help you. You can also test out your signature or ticker there too.

Re: the ketostix. A lot of people don't use them (I never have) and are in ketosis. They are not the best indicator IMO (in my opinion). Where you haven't lost any weight, however, you may not be in ketosis.

We can help you review a sample menu and point you in the right direction to change that! A good starting place is the Induction FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) and also reading the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR 2002).

Miszkie -- Thank you thank you THANK YOU for your response -- I am already feeling more resolved and seeing solutions where before I only saw problems.

I will write up a sample menu over the next day or two for posting, and I think I will toss the Stix. I know with the support of people like yourself I can prevail.

THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN!!! (ps I'm a fellow-geek)

You can post your menus in the Review My Menu thread. You don't have to toss the ketostix...many people use them. There are some informative threads on ADBB about them and what they specifically test and why yours may or may not turn color. I would check those out and make your own informed decision on their use then.

Re: New not only to Atkins but also to internet groups!

Welcome aboard and kudos to you for hopping back on the Atkins wagon. You won't regret it.

Posting your menu in the Review my Menu forum will be a big help, I'm sure.
You could also be losing inches rather than weight (sometimes the weight takes a little time to catch up) and it's inches that count and are the true guage of how much slimmer you're getting.

Remember to drink lots of water and to exercise.

Sometimes (often the second time around) it takes a while for weight loss to kick in again. It takes me a good three weeks, on those occasions when I tighten my eating up, for me to notice a difference on the scales.

You can do it. We'll help!
          Before and after:

          PLEDGING FLIGHTS
Completed: 1st set of buildings and mountains (Everest,M.Blanc & Kilimanjaro, twice); Tower Masts & Chimneys; More virtual buildings; Challenger's Choice x 2 (volcanos and mountains on Mars). Currently climbing: Mount Snowdon again: 416/475

Start 10 Jan 2005. Maintenance since Aug. 2005.

Re: New not only to Atkins but also to internet groups!

            Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Before oming to the ABDD I had never posted on a bulletin board but tis is an easy site to navigate (you'll feel good in a couple days) and you'll find a lot of support to help you along the way.

The 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) is the book we follow here. It would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to (
www.amazon.com or www.half.com have inexpensive copies). At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin without iron (you should get enough iron with the foods you are eating on Atkins).

Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – something for everyone.

Make a copy of this list
(What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
