  • Hi - first time on Atkins

    Hello all, this is my first time on Atkins, and I'm currently on about day 7 or 8 of induction. I was amazed at how soon the carb cravings went away, but I'm having trouble giving up caffeine. I know that caffeine isn't allowed in induction, but am not sure why. I haven't been able to read the book yet (waiting for it to be returned to the library) so I don't know the answer from there.

    A little background, all my life I was one of those annoying people who could eat massive amounts of ice cream, sugar, etc and stay small. That lasted until I got pregnant - pregnancy changed everything! I gained 80 pounds while pregnant, and then had a c-section so my stomach muscles were cut in two, and then had heart issues right after pregnancy, so I wasn't able to excercise for awhile. Currently, I'm 40 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight. I've realized that all the pregnancy surgery and medications affected my body's reaction to food, so I've got to find something that works to get this weight off. I've seen Atkins work for other people, so decided it was time to try it.

    I'll be posting before pictures and getting things set up soon, so, nice to meet you all and if anyone could point me to where I can find the answer to the caffeine question I'd appreciate it!

    Welcome to the Atkins Board.

    I hope your library gets the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR), to you soon. Until you can get a copy you’ll find a condensed version at the top of the induction -

    Caffeine slows or stops weight loss, that's why it's not allowed on Atkins. If you drink coffee you can change to decaf, if you drink regular soda switch to diet (or stop drinking it entirely). You should be drinking a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin. Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – there is something for everyone.

    Hopefully you already have a copy of this but if not...make a copy of this list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

    The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

      I haven't give up my coffee in the morning.I have lost 13lb's.I drink water the rest of the day trying for a gallon a day.

        I cut my coffee in half and now drink half-caf. Still works ok for me.

          Thanks both of you! I haven't drank soda in a long time, and already make it a practice to drink as close to 80oz of water per day that I can.

          I'm doing good with the acceptable food list except for the caffeine. I may start working on that. Thanks!

            I took small steps - for example - I used to drink a cup of coffee on the way to work and also took a thermos to work with about 2-3 more cups. I now take one covered cup with me and don't drink it in the car. Do what you can, just take small steps - pretty soon it will be habit.
