  • Also New!

Hi. I'm returning to Atkins after a 6 year hiatis. I used Atkins to take care of 6 months and 60 lbs worth of bedrest after my daughter was born. Now, having quit smoking, I packed on 25 llbs in the wink of an eye. I've been in Induction for 2 weeks. Lost 4 lbs in the first week and was so happy I was skipping around. Second week is a bust. I haven't changed my habits or eating patterns but am a bit PMS. Peed on the stick and am still in ketosis. I want the great feeling of watching the number on the scale change back!

Having read a few posts I'm going to get a big glass of water and a copy of the book.

Are the Atkins shakes ok? They are currently helping me not to go insane.

    Re: Also New!

I think they go by the first release Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution here mainly because sticking to whole real foods works best for most people. The shakes tend to stall some people and the bars too. It says it is okay for induction but those are the people selling it and its not. If you got to have that shake, look for one made with whey protein isolate and splenda. Isopure zero carb is one. But its so high in protein it will totally unbalance the induction diet for most people and make their protein too high. I know, I still sneak in a half of one now and again but had to stop having it everyday.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

    1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
    2nd mini goal: 140!
    3rd mini goal:135!
    4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

          Re: Also New!

I cut the Atkins shakes out when I was in induction. I found they stalled me. I did better without them. I think it was the sweetener in them. I am somewhat sensitive the sweeteners.

Maybe we can think of something else to keep you sane. (I used a bit of cream cheese, or cheddar cheese crackers)

            Re: Also New!

            Welcome back to Atkins --
We do follow the 2002 DANDR book here - because it is whole foods and doesn't believe in eating or drinking things the ATKINS company believes are "diet" foods. They are in business to make money, not to make us healthy.

Why do you say the shakes keep you sane? What are you missing that you feel the need to drink them? In place of drinking a meal it's best to fix a real meal and enjoy chewing it. You will see people who can eat and drink most anything and loose weight, but it's now what happens to everyone. The plan is based on science - and the foods on the plan have been found to help the majority of people loose weight. The plan works best when you follow it the way it was written -- hopefully you already have the 2002 DANDR book and have read it. If not it's worth a few dollars to purchase one (with shipping mine was about $5.00 on www.amazon.com – or try www.half.com).

Regardless of what you did before, or what people are doing now, your body is different than anyone so it’s best not to compare what happened before or what's happening with others. Check the STAC Second Time Around Club - Atkins Diet for additional support.

Get enough pure water in daily (64oz is recommended), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin.

The recipe sites will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- check them out! Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html) - 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list daily.

              Re: Also New!

After getting off the shake mix myself, I don't find that I crave chocolate or anything as bad. I sometimes want something RIGHT NOW! So I have an oz of real extra sharp cheddar, then pop something in the microwave or start a real meal. The cheese gets me threw until its cooked. I keep chicken leg quarters and some hamburger thawed and ready to go. They are pretty cheap. You can nuke the chicken if you're in hurry. After Induction a lot of people don't loose for a week or two as their body adjusts. Once you are over this you can start to move up the rungs in OWL and add in more things. Just remind yourself how much better for you it is to be eating real food without all the additives and things you can't even pronounce. I don't make anything fancy most of the time, but checkout the recipe section if you do like to cook. There is this recipe for chololate mousse in there, not sure if its Induction friendly, but if its the chocolate craving the shakes are for, you might try it when you get to point it says its legal.

                Re: Also New!

Oh my goodness! Thanks so much for all the feedback. To answer the one question about my sanity...I like the shakes because I work with food. Lots and lots of high carb naughty food. I also work really long hours and sometimes the sweet fix of the shake at my desk takes the edge off of the impending munchy attack (that used to be a cigarette break) and the pile of bagels hold less temptation. I guess I'm particularly vulnerable this week because of the PMS...all I want to do is eat but haven't cheated.

I like the cheese idea and actually did some damage to a hunk of extra sharp cheddar this afternoon. But, also don't want to go overboard on the cheese.

Drinking more water and hoping that scale decides to budge again! Salad is already packed to take to work with me.

Make sure you don't go over 4 ounces of cheese daily. In place of bad carby food try these items:

                  Special Category Foods
To add variety, each day you can also eat 10 to 20 olives, half a small avocado, an ounce of sour cream or three ounces of unsweetened heavy cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.

Also a few pork rinds (watch the sodium in them) help people from time to time also
