  • Trying to decide

    Hi all,

I'm new, trying to decide if this is something that I should take on. I'm a good 40 pounds overwieght, and I have seen people really succeed with Atikins. I'm worried though, that I will spend the first 2 weeks in a daze - my job requires a lot of analysis and brain power and I can't afford to be "out of it" because I haven't eaten a proper breakfast.

I also keep Shabbat and it's a requirement to eat about an ounce of Challah (bread) on Friday night and Saturday lunch. Will this ruin the diet?

Any help and opinions and past experiences are much appreciated

    Re: Trying to decide

Maybe you can take a week off of work if you think that it is going to be a problem. For me, I had no induction flu symptoms other than a headache for 2 days. I have had so much energy!

Is there a specific recipe that you must follow for Challah? Or can you use an imitation for bread, like the muffin in a minute recipe that is on the recipe board?

      Thank for your help!

I can't take off work for the moment, and the bread has to have flour, water, and salt baked into it.

      ... It's not good, hmmm?

I'm a programmer and I wasn't affected, just don't cheat yourself - follow the plan.

As far as the bread, it will slow you down, but you just need to know that. I would follow the plan, around those 2 oz of bread - I believe you will still lose.

There is no reason why you shouldn't hav "a proper breakfast".....a couple eggs, cheese a ounce of peppers and/or onion and brekfast meat (bacon, ham, even chicken or beef) -- nothing improper about that.

Many people have slight induction flu problems or none at all....I had a headache for a couple days which wasn't bad at all....I did have a day of diarreah (de-carbing my body) that wasn't enough to slow me down much -- but other than that nothing I couldn't handle. If you eat the proper foods, drink plenty of water and take a vitamin you should get through the first few days with no problem. Once your body gets into keotsis the flu-like symptoms (if you have any) will go away. If you have a headache, by all means, take a couple pain releavers - no reason to suffer needlessly.

As far as the bread you are required to eat for your religion, it will slow you down but if it's the only thing you eat off plan it shouldn't be that bad.

Make a copy of this list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

You will find using the recipes below, you are actually eating better than you were before -- make sure you get all your vegetables daily.

During induction make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

              Re: Trying to decide

In induction I noticed physical symptoms but nothing mental. It's hard to say for sure how badly it will affect you, if at all.

I know of quite a number of people who, for religious reasons, eat at least some bread every week. I would suggest, and I'm sorry if this shows my religious ignorance, that if possible you should make your own and use whole wheat flour or eat something with it that is high in fiber. This should help by slowing down the absorption of the carbs and perhaps mitigating the insulin response.

What about almond flour? Maybe you can find something that is a little more Atkins friendly than plain white flour. It may be a bit more work...but it would be worth it.

If that is not something that you can do, you will still be better off staying completely on plan except the small amount of bread. The Induction Flu symptoms are unique to each person and many suffer from none at all. For me the headache was fixed with Tylenol. I work in an environment where every detail counts and I actually find myself more focused and not thinking about what I am going to eat next.

                Good luck!
