  • hello everyone!im new, have some concerns?

hi, my name is Elli, im 25, & married with 2 kids. my husband & i are doing the atkins diet together after feeling that in the last few years we are gaining weight & not feeling very healthy or energetic.
my main worry with doing the atkins induction faze is that i have been warned by my gp, if i loose weight too drastically(although sounds wonderful!) i may stop making milk & not be able to breast feed my youngest any more, so i am torn & will see how i go. i know its important to do the first 2 wks properly, but i dont want to put a healthy lifestyle change on hold, also dont want to have to put my baby on formula either.
anyway so far this forum has been great source of info, So thankyou very much for allowing me to joing you.

According to Dr. Atkins a pregnant or nursing mother should not be in any weight loss phase of the Atkins diet. You can do Maintenance Phase, but not induction, OWL, or pre-maintenance.

I know you want to lose weight fast, my wife and I went through the same thing. Breast feeding is a personal choice but in my opinion the long term benefits of breast feeding far outweigh the short term delay in losing weight quickly. Maintenance phase of Atkins is a very healthy way to eat. If you start that now you will be still helping yourself immensely. When the time comes to stop breastfeeding you can drop down to induction, to get a jump start if you feel the need, the work your way back up.

Welcome to the board and best of health to you and to your baby!

As im sure your dr has told you the breast feeding can actually help you lose weight. The average nursing mother burns an extra 500 calories a day! If you want to quit nursing then by all means quit but if you want to keep going take heart in the knowledge that even with the maintenence phase and the extra 500 cals being burned you might start losing weight anyways.

I lost some weight breastfeeding and I was eating whatever back then too. I'd breastfeed and worry about the weight later. But I think the maintance diet could be good because you make sure you are getting all the healthy fats in for making that milk!

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

        1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
        2nd mini goal: 140!
        3rd mini goal:135!
        4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

Thankyou so much! i think i will just stay on the maintenance phaze, nice to know if my thought s are warrented. i mainly wanteed to do atkins in the first place because when i was pregnant i ate what ever i wanted wheneve3r i wanted, and after having her i was the same, so in the last few months i have been gaining weight, and mainly because i am addicted to sugar & all carbs in general. i am glad to hear i am not the only one who think breastfeeding is far more important, the response i was getting from my frieds was why bother if your not going to do it properly? and your just making excuses! so maintenence program for me! beacause i think it will really help my health, and that of my family, so thanks very much for your help and support!
