  • I really need your support (2nd time around)

I am off the Prednisone now, in nursing school full time, working too. My daughter moved away to "make it easier on me" and since then I have gone from my 188 pounds I struggled to get to 255.6 as of this morning.

I started my diet today but I have a few obstacles to overcome. One of them being, my fridge doesn't work. The second one being, 13 hour clinical days for school and feeding myself when they don't even give us time to pee, much less hydrate.

I want to do this as clean as possible but I see myself having to use the bars once or twice a week during the time I spend in the hospital.

Well, that's about it, I know I can do it. It seems like the worst possible time to start but I just can't wait any more the weight I have gained is seriously hindering me.

I have been lurking a few days but didn't want to come back until I was sure I could. Any ideas on snacks that don't require refrigeration that I can have in my pocket at the hospital would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Your schedule may make it more difficult to succeed, but you can take baggies of vegetables or cheese sticks, rolled up meats and other foods to eat in place of the shakes and bars -- the reason it's not wise to use them is they are filled with ingredients that aren't induction friendly (regardless of what the Atkins people put on the labels) - there are better choices to take with you other than them.

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added) start drinking when you wake up and sip everytime you get a chance throughout the day - it's really not that much water once you get use to it. Do some type of exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin. If you haven't already, read the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR).

Eat the foods on the acceptable food list
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and find wonderful recipes here: just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with. Vary your meals so you don't get tired of eating the same thing over and over -- we have too many choices for that to happen.

Hi Porcelain - so good to see you back.
I wondered what happened to you.
Well those are quite interesting things to overcome. I suggest posting in the main forum - more people go there and I am sure we all well try and think up ideas for you.
I don't know what I would do without a fridge personally That would be hard
Snacks - cheese are pepperoni would be OK. I often rely on eggs but not sure how those would do in your pocket. Home made jerky would be good.

Re: I really need your support (2nd time around)

Sorry it took me so long to reply! I just finished my class. My next class doesn't start until next week so I have a little breathing time. It's still difficult, one of the rotations I had to work was in the ER and water wasn't even allowed on the floor. The girl that was with me even asked if she could have bottles of water because she was on antibiotics with a UTI and was told no. I told myself I would just go to the water dispenser for the patients and get me a cupful of water but that was a no go when I found out it was outside of the emergency department and I would get locked out of the deparment if I went out. I have never had trouble getting my water before. We are supposed to get a new fridge today (finally!) and first thing I am going to do is make some of the quiche so I will have a good breakfast.

I got my CT scan back about my chest and it is almost clear. Only one nodule left and some thickening of the tissue on the right side. I go to the doctor tomorrow and I am hoping he will fully release me back to exercising. I no longer feel like I am going insane since I am off the steroids. I still have some coughing and feel like I don't have a lot of oxygenation but I am sure that will change once I start swimming again.

So that is where I am right now, waiting on the doctor for the word to go full force. Getting the fridge today so I can make sure I have fresh veggies all the time. I am excited and really commited. This is one of the few times I have actually felt optimistic.

How about a cooler bag with an ice pack in it. It will keep boiled eggs, cheese and veggie stix cold for you with no problem

Re: I really need your support (2nd time around)

Thanks for replying Jill, the reason I mentioned I was getting new fridge was our old one would work a little while then stop. It has its own schedule. We would wake up and everything would be thawed out.

I know there is never going to be a perfect time for me to start (no red carpet rolled out, for sure) but it really cramps your style when you can't depend on your fridge. When I did atkins before and had busy weeks, I could spend a day getting things set up and putting it in bags and baking quiche muffins but now we just buy food we can eat in 24 hours.
