  • Newbie: Starting Day 6 on Induction - Down 7.5 lbs.

I wanted to introduce myself, as I am brand new not only to this board but also to Atkins. I started doing this new eating style because my body needed a jumpstart from all of my old, BAD habits. I had done limited calorie diets many times in the past, and been successful on them when I did them, but always seemed to gain the weight back, while being hungry, tired and irritable when I was on them, having to weigh every little morsel of food for every single meal. Three work friends of mine have been doing low-carb of some sort for the past two years and have had TREMENDOUS success, even keeping off the weight to date. I'm excited to be starting this newest chapter in my life, but am wondering if I'm doing things correctly. So here it goes....
    1. I started Induction for the very first time on Wednesday September 23rd at a weight of 187.8lbs on my 5'6.5" frame.
    2. My goal weight is 148 (which is smack dab in the middle of my healthy weight range). So that means I've got nearly 40lbs. total to lose.
    3. After being on Induction for five days (today is day six) I have lost 7.5lbs total OMG!!!! I admit it's not a completely clean induction (for example had black beans on a salad a couple of days), but have completely eliminated all other "bad" carbs.
    4. I was exercising four to five days per week at my work's gym, but m exercise is non-existent right now (work and volunteering and other life schedule conflicts in the way), but am back on track beginning next week.
So what do you think? Am I doing this in the right way, or should I even completely eliminate those couple of extra carbs I got from black beans? Also, I'm not weighing anything or really paying attention to how much I eat, but I do know I'm eating less. For example, I have no desire to have any snacks at all and since I'm having so much protein and so many veggies, I can just tell I'm eating less (especially with all my low calorie diet experience before!!), but should I be doing something different there as well?

Thanks for any help you can provide. It is so appreciated!!!

    Welcome!

Did you eat the black beans because you didn't know they weren't allowed or was it by accident?

    >>Am I doing this in the right way, or should I even completely eliminate those couple of extra carbs I got from black beans?>>

Well ... black beans are not an Induction food, that's for sure. They're quite up there on the OWL carb ladder, and many people never add legumes back in ... though many do eat black soybeans instead.

    >>should I be doing something different there as well>>

Atkins isn't more protein than you need ... so don't overdo.

I hope you're reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002). It explains the science behind this way of eating ... which is "for life" ... and not just until you lose the weight. Keeping the pounds off is the real goal!

Ask questions ... journal your food so you know how many net carbs you are eating ... drink all your water.

      Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and take a multi-vitamin. If you haven't already, read the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR). Many of the challenges will be starting the first of the month, look around to see if there are any that interest you.

Eat ONLY the foods on the acceptable food list. If a food isn't on the acceptable food list you shouldn't be eating it until you are on that Rung of the plan.
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html . You'll find wonderful recipes here: just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with. Vary your meals so you don't get tired of eating the same thing over and over -- we have too many choices for that to happen.
