  • Hi I am new here and to Atkins and I am fat...

    Hello, I am fat.

I have made every excuse known to man as to why I am fat. In 2003 I was 110 LBS. I wore a size 2, sometimes smaller. I am now 167 LBS and I am fat.

I hate how I look, I am tired all the times and I cry about my body at times. I have been single for along time and in my head I believe its because I am fat. I don't have a good support system and need help.

I have set my start date for October 4th.

I just bought the book yesterday and am reading it and getting ideas for what to eat my first week. I hear this works and will get you into good habits. I am not sure how long it will take to loose 50 lbs but one of the ladies I know lost 25 lbs in about 3 months so I am hoping. Begging this will work because trying other methods have not worked.

Please any help, tips, ideas or success stories will help. I am not really sure how to start yet but I assume over the next few days of reading I will figure it out. How much can I expect to loose in the first week? I assume about 3LBS?

I need friends along the way...

well good morning fluffy - good choice to join this forum, it is excellent. Just be patient, follow the plan - come out and chat, post, read, etc...you will succeed. We're all different, so can't say 'how much you can expect' - just be assured that after that first week, you will feel so much better - about your health, self, etc.

I look forward to your posts - love your name!

Re: Hi I am new here and to Atkins and I am fat...

        Fluffy!

Firstly...I dream of being 167 pounds, so put that into perspective. In fact, I know there are people on this board who would give their eye teeth to be at my current weight, so we all should work on putting our weight struggles into perspective.

Now for reality. Yes, you will lose weight, and if you stick to the diet and visit the boards for advice, to chat, get support, etc, it will be easier. However, given that you have so little to lose you should not be expecting 15-20 pound losses in your first month (not that it WON'T happen, just don't expect it). You have to be a little reasonable in your expectations and remember that each person's body reacts to weight loss differently. There are people on this board who have lost 20 pounds in their first two weeks alone and others who struggle through 12 pounds in their first month. (raising my hand to this one)

This way of life (WOL) really does work as anyone here will tell you and can testify to, and you should make sure you commit yourself not just for the quick weight loss but also for your health, the end of your dependency on processed foods. If you do that you will stick with it even through the month-long stalls, the bizarre water weight gain, and the amazingly huge weight drops.

        Welcome! Good luck!

Re: Hi I am new here and to Atkins and I am fat...

Wow, I was never expecting someone to play down my weight challenges! I am not saying I haven't put my goals into perspective compared to others but take into account that for me this is my perspective. I am fat and unhappy and looking for support. Maybe I don't need to loose as much as others but to me this is a lot and I am struggling. Don't down play what I have to lose that is not very nice nor supportive. As I mentioned, I intend 3 lbs in the first week. I think that is a fair goal.

Please don't be so harsh to people saying hello and just signing up looking to learn. The reality is we are all looking to get the same results - weight loss.

Try not to talk down to people but lend a hand and help guide them. it may not seem like a lot of weight to you but to me its a lot!

Don't feel sorry for me - I'm thrilled and feel great! Best I've felt in a long time. Atkins has basically saved me - I was very depressed and sad. I'm back to my old self - even after 20 lbs - can't wait to lose more, but I'm very patient...it took me a long time to put it on!

ADBB = Atkins Diet Bulletin Board

There are a lot of exercise challenges out on the forum. These are great motivators. I challenged myself to do 900 situps and 500 squats the month of September, and I made my goal. Surprised myself! I started doing 10 of each every morning, then worked it up slowly. I'm now doing 50 [at least] every day. It's great!

oh no no, I am sorry I didn't mean it like I feel sorry for you. I meant sorry for asking cause I am not sure I was reading things right. I am not sure on how to read the signatures. 20 lbs is awesome. I can't wait to get there. I mean oh man cause I can only imagine how great that must feel and am jealous I can't say that...yet. I will get there and am so thrilled to hear you will walk with me to get there.

I am so glad I asked about the crunches and things I thought you meant this was all in a day...I really thought I was going to die should I have to do that many in a day...I wonder how many I can do in a day...I shall find out..hehe

Re: Hi I am new here and to Atkins and I am fat...

no need to apologize You should go join a challenge today, they are so motivating. You just set your own goals. In my first squat challenge, everyone else is doing 1000+ and I challenged myself to 500, then I went way over. In the situps, don't know what I was thinking but challenged myself to 900 - this was much more difficult - but I'm going to make it! That is so exciting for me.

Also in a water challenge. I always drank a lot of water, but wasn't sure exactly how much - so I'm drinking 100oz per day. I really think it helped this month.

This is a great forum to get involved! You will enjoy.

                  Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and take a multi-vitamin. I'm glad you are reading the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) - that will put you ahead of the crowd when it comes to knowing why the plan works, how it works and the science behind it. Many of the challenges will be starting the first of the month, look around to see if there are any that interest you.

Eat ONLY the foods on the acceptable food list. If a food isn't on the acceptable food list you shouldn't be eating it until you are on that Rung of the plan.

You'll find wonderful recipes here: just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with. Vary your meals so you don't get tired of eating the same thing over and over -- we have too many choices for that to happen.

                    Hey there, IANFIAF

                    First off,

Secondly- It's easy to be overly sensitive and read things into a written word that aren't there. The truth is that no one's weight struggle here is harder for them than the next person's- and you'll not find a group of people more sensitive to that fact than the members of ADBB. Bella's intention wasn't to downplay you and your journey. Her intention was to let you know that a lot of people are just trying to get to where you are. To put it into fair perspective, think of how you'd feel or react to someone who popped in here with 10lbs to lose bemoaning how fat and horrible they are/look/feel. When you have 50lbs to lose, 10lbs doesn't look so terrible, does it? The perspective works on all sides. Hang around here and you'll quickly find that people like Bella are good stuff.

As for your question- You can reasonably expect to remove 5-10% (2.5-5lbs) of the total amount of weight you need to remove during a clean two week induction. Anything less than that would be indicitive of a level of metabolic resistance. Anything more than that is a GIFT. Your expectations of yourself and your goals have to stay realistic. We all want to remove it RIGHT NOW, but the reality is that we have ZERO control over that. What you do have control over is what you eat, how often and hard you exercise, how much water you drink, what supplements you take, etc. How fast your body releases the fat isn't something we can dictate, so dictate the heck out of the things you can.

I never wish anyone luck, because luck has squat to do with it. What I will say is this: I wish you success!

                      Hi Fluffy,

Brook has pointed out a major truth--it is really hard to read the "tone" of any written message, so try not to take things the wrong way-most folks mean well. And everyone looks at things from the perspective of his or her own journey. We are glad you have joined us and, like Brook, I wish you great success.

Re: Hi I am new here and to Atkins and I am fat...

I'm so glad to see a couple posts in response to your reponse. I have to say when I saw your response to my post I went from confused to hurt to irritated within a heartbeat. I had several immediate responses written up and ready to post which would not have been truly representative of what I was trying to get across or of who I really am.

This is a place of great support and not everyone gives that support simply by spewing sickeningly sweet gooey "you go girls" around when they see someone really struggling (though at time they are certainly needed and appreciated). To assume that another person is putting you down or being harsh and then calling that person out solely based on your assumption is really unfair to that person and can be the beginning of some really nasty forum talk if it gets out of hand. Just remember that you cannot accurately judge what someone is feeling when they are writing something, so don't make assumptions.

Whether you have 10 pounds or 200 pounds to lose I would be supportive and I stand behind my comments 100%.

I would love to be at 167, it would be a dream for me, and I have struggled with my own body issues for years until I met people who were much heavier and it put my own issues into perspective. So I have about 80-90 pounds to lose and if someone belittled that struggle I would be upset, but I would never assume someone here was purposefully belittling it. If there was ever a place filled with people who understand the weight loss struggle it is this forum. Perhaps you should look inward to see why it was so easy for you to jump on my attempt at being supportive as a put down.

Lastly, we see people here (and I have been among them, which is how I know) that jump on the bandwagon, get excited by others' weight loss stories and start making unrealistic expectations for themselves and within a month we never see them again. Why? Because of those expectations. No, 3 pounds in your first week isn't so unheard of, but setting up pounds per week, or even per month is not good for you. Sure, I'm as guilty as anyone for wanting and dreaming of losing 2-3 pounds each week so I can reach my goals by my set date but I know it may not happen and I've started and quit this diet enough times to realize that. I am learning to be happy and set reasonable expectations for myself so I don't get frustrated when I don't reach a magic number and then quit. I think I speak for everyone on this board when I say that setting reasonable and flexible goals and sticking with it even if you don't meet them when you hope to is PARAMOUNT!

Those are two of my best recommendations, suggestions, and pieces of support that I have and they come from 10 years of starting and stopping Atkins because of my own failings as well as 20 years of being a professional dieter. I'm sorry you could not take them in the manner in which they were intended.

I started on 8/15 @ 164 and that is big for me because I am only 4'11 tall! By 9/21 I was down to 147 pounds by following the book and doing what I was suppose to do INCLUDING exercise. Now I get all sorts of compliments at work on what am I doing etc... etc... etc... And I just say I am eating lower carb due to hubby's diabetes because i do not want to get in any debate. Been there done that and won the award!

Key thing to remember: Take it day by day, plan ahead, and read read read. Read the book, read the boards, arm yourself with knowledge. Try different recipes on linda's site http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html (Linda’s) and get in that water!!

Remember we are here to give you support. You can do it!!!
Ps. Take pictures and measurements...when that scale does not move the tape measure does! Trust me...I have lost over 2 inches off my waist alone and am LOVING IT!
