    hello from Iowa

I am a lifetime dieter. (age51) I have done atkins a few times. Always with great results. I just have never been able to convert my hubby into eating this way. As a result the weight keeps creaping back. Plus more.
My Dr. is pressuring me to go for lap band surgery. I would rather do this with diet and exercise. I am waiting for my book to arrive, will do the best i can till i get it.
I have loved what i have read so far and hope to get lots of help from everyone here along the way. Thanks Sandy

          Hi and welcome Sandy –

Glad you decided to join us, you won't regret it. I'm glad you've ordered the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book -- it's best to have all the information you can have for the best success.

I've been an Iowan on an off for years - presently living outside St. Louis. There is an "over 50" thread where we'd love to have you join us as wel as many other threads you might be interested in.

The recipe sites will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- check them out! Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html) - eat enough vegetables - 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list daily.
Many of us use www.Fitday.com to track our food so we know what our carb totals are for the day. It's important you know what you are eating and how many carbs you are taking in each day.

            Re: hello from Iowa

Hi Sandy, My hubby doesnt do Atkins either so I make my Atkins stuff and then throw in a baked potato or some rice or a starch for him. If I make chili, I split the pot up after cooking it and throw some beans in his half. Just because they don't do it doesnt mean you have to eat what they do. And here is the thing- if you are the cook, cook what works for you and add in their starches on the side. Bread, potatoes, rice, noodles--you can cook all of those and still do Atkins friendly sauces and stews with which to eat them. Often when my DH wants pasta (his family is Italian) I ladle some gravy (that's NYC Italian for marinara) over my meat and sprinkle on some cheese. Instant chicken parm and Atkins friendly. Same goes for tex mex-I make it a tex mex salad while he uses the tortillas.

Lesson: Don't let them become an excuse to go off plan. They will adapt to your needs if you meet them half way.
