  • Getting too close for comfort

Hello all; since this is the introduction place, I guess I'll do that.
I am a 57 year old man with a very destructive habit. I appear to be in the process of eating myself into the grave. To make a long story short, I am 5'11" at around 295 LBs.. I have been gaining weight rapidly since I turned 50. Here is what has led me to this site in the hope of help and support, (something I don't ask lightly). I have been put on a blood pressure medicine for about 4 months and it has some nasty side effects. I have been getting muscle cramps from it and had my jaw muscles cramp when attempting, of all things, to bite into a candy apple. I have been in motorcycle accidents that hurt less. It frightened my son so badly that I had to stop him from calling 911. So this is what I am reduced to...an out of control person scaring his loved ones with his approaching demise.
My guitar won't fit on my lap anymore and by far the most important thing...I can't be the man that I was for the woman that I love.
Enough is Enough. I believe that I need a support structure. I hope that I will find it here.

Welcome Bluespicker. Atkins really does work if you follow it closely. It does seem to be a diet well suited to most of the men I have met. I am sure it will work for you too. DO make sure that you make the effort to find the 2002 book and read it, and if your wife is doing the cooking, it would be great if she would read up too. It will save you making costly (on the scale) mistakes and will teach you how and why this Way of Eating (WOE) works. There is and entire board of folks waiting to support you in any way we can.

Thank you for the welcome, Jill and Funky. I did Atkins about 17 years ago and it worked very well for me. Here's to hoping for a repeat because I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Hi and welcome aboard. Even though you did it years ago, make sure you re-read the books and many of the sticky posts and FAQs here. I've had many times that I thought I was "doing Atkins", even after reading the book, and realized that I was doing things wrong.

Hi and welcome back to Atkins Bluespicker --

Regardless of what you did before, or what people are doing now, your body is different than anyone so it’s best not to compare - just follow the plan the way it's written. Look around and find what interests you and join in. Check the STAC Second Time Around Club - Atkins Diet for additional support.

I hope you already have the 2002 DANDR book and have read it, it is the edition we follow on this site. If not it's worth a few dollars to purchase. Get enough pure water in daily (64oz is recommended), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin.

The recipe sites will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- check them out! Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)(What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html) - 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list daily.

Thank you, everyone for these very kind greetings. I am not 24hrs from my last carbs and I can feel the withdrawal symptoms. This means that I will be leaning on you folks in this forum for guidance and moral support and I appreciate all the help that I will get.
                  Once again, Thanks
