  • Learning... for now.

    Hi everyone,

My name is Angie. I've long been interested in the Atkins diet, and keep a pretty low-carb diet naturally-- I no longer eat any white bread, and definitely focus a lot on lean proteins (salmon, chicken, etc). My biggest worry about embracing the approach is my deep love of fruit, especially apples, peaches (in season), plums, berries, and mango.

Anyway, I'm joining the board to just learn a bit more about the diet and read about different peoples' experiences. People have told me in the past I might be a better fit for South Beach, so I'm exploring that option as well. I'm hoping to take off about 10-12 stubborn pounds before my wedding next summer, but not much more than that.

    Thanks!
    Angie

    Welcome!

Fruit is certainly a choice on Atkins ... just not on Induction.

If you're just dieting to lose 10-12 pounds, Atkins may not be a good fit for you ... it's not a short term diet.

With so little weight to lose, you might be able to start on OWL, rather than Induction. Presuming you find Atkins to be a lifestyle choice for you!

      Hi angie
      Welcome from me too.
I think low carbing is a great way to lose weight. Probably have to stay away from fruits for a bit in the beginning. At this point in my journey - I eat some fruits probably everyday. But I stay away from the very sugary ones and I usually combine with some fats to not get the bloodsugar response from fruit.
Another thing about Atkins is that it is high fat - if you are leaning towards lean (bad pun) South Beach may be the way for you.

        Re: Learning... for now.

        Hi and welcome --

The best way to find out about the Atkins program is to purchase and read the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) book -- it's what we follow here.

As others above have said, during induction there is no fruit but as you progress up the OWL rungs every food is added back - that's one of the misconceptions about Atkins....that we never eat anything other than meat and eggs....nothing is further from the truth!

If you decided to follow Atkins we'll be here to help you with any and all questions. Good luck.
        Carole
