  • Hello.... New guy here...

Hey there everyone! Well I guess I should start off my new venture here by saying hello. I am just starting the AD and I must say that I am excited to see how it works out. I am currently 345lbs; I gained this weight after I was injured in a car accident. My injuries were substantial; I broke my neck in 3 places which left a hole in my C5/C6, ruptured disk in T9/T10, T12/L1 and L5/S1, 2 disk that are bulging in my spinal cord, dislocated both clavicles, crushed my sciatic nerve, ripped both my gastrocnemius and the soleus (the muscles that make up your calves) in both legs, and sustained brain damage that has impaired my memory recall. Prior to the accident I was an avid powerlifter with a max bench of 410lbs and a leg press of 1500lbs, and NO these are not typos :P

The pics in my sig are from about 2 years ago. Not too sure what I weigh there, but I am sure I am fatter now. I will get some fresh pics as soon as I can find someone willing to endure the horrors of me half naked.

From my last caliper test, about 4 moths ago, my BF was 29%. Since i have a lot of muscle mass, I don't bother with my BMI. Thought my lean body weight is around 215lbs. My RHR is a sweet 70bpm.

My goal is to get to about 230lbs -/+. I am not too concerned about the "weight" since I will also be lifting, as well as, getting my cardio on target. I would also like to find some people in the Jacksonville, Fl area as a local support group.

Well that is about it I think. I suck when it come to this "introduce yourself" kind of thing so if you want to know more just ask!

    Ciao,

    Sweet Meats

      Welcome Sweetmeats,
Atkins works well if you work it cleanly and stick to the program as designed. As a lifter you may be used to a program that is designed around lean protein and veggies-Atkins is not high protein. It is high fat. The fat is what makes this Way Of Eating (WOE) work.

If you are using whey protein, keep in mind that it isn't allowed until Rung 2. If you do your 2 weeks of Induction and spend a week at Rung 1 with some extra veggies you will be up to the rung for whey proteins for a post workout shake.

Impressive numbers. We have a strength training challenge in the Exercise challenges thread. If you want to pledge a minutes worked goal for November, check it out.

        Welcome Sweet --

Hope you've read the 202 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) book - it's what we follow here. Get enough pure water in daily (64oz is recommended), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin.

The new challenges will be starting in the next few days -- check them out and join a couple that interest you.

Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html) - 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list daily. Rules of Induction: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What are the Rules of Induction?)

            Re: Hello.... New guy here...

Thanks for the welcome guys and girls! Looks like this place will be fun!!!

As for the book imagood1, I am not sure which I have; what is the difference between the versions? As for the diet itself, I am taking it to a little extreme on the carbs. I am limiting myself to less than the allotted 20g/p/d. I want to get the glucose out of my system as soon as I can and since I don't miss carbs too much, it is not that bad for me. If i start getting abdominal cramps I will take some Taurine.

I plan on running the induction as long as I can. It will all depend on how I feel in the gym. If I lack too much energy then I will add some clean carbs.

In regards to any challenges. As of now I will be going into this at a slow pace since I have my injuries to contend with. In time, when my body gets accustom to working out again, I will defiantly be game

What about supplements? Are you guys implementing any into your diet? Anyone using L-carnitine, T-3, T-4, clenbuterol or the like?

I do have a M/R question; I am substitution 2 to 3 meals with a high protein and low carb shake. When taking the M/R, I will only use 1 scoop instead of the recommended 2 per shake. Please review the Nutritional list and tell me what you think.

Lost of super heavy questions in your last post. I'll try to address some of them.

              Version of books
Atkins changed his diet a bit between 1972 and 2002. He tried different things with his patients to see what worked well and in 2002 he felt that eating more carb right out of the bat was the best. But it is still only 20 net carbs. He also has some ideas about how to sustain weightloss while introducing more carbs in 2002 and lost of tips about maintenance. We follow 2002 here. We like it.

              Vegetables.

So because we follow 2002 we emphasize eating vegetables. They are not scary carb at all and the body do well on natural nutrients AND most importantly it is not going to hinder weightloss. Dropping veggies does not make you lose faster.

              Supplements
Yes, we all take probably a multi vitamin/ multi mineral tabl. Some do other stuff but it is their own choice. It does not look like their is any magic tabl you can take to make anything work better.

              Your protein drink
              Looks OK.

What are you going to do for fibre?

This is the book I down loaded; is this the correct version?

As for the veggies, I am assuming that your reply was a rebuttal to my post regarding that I am limiting my intake of carbs less than 20g/p/d? If so, are you saying that I will not deplete or expel my glucose more rapidly even if my intake of carb is >20g/p/d?

Yeah, there is no magic pill in the supplement industry unless it is D-Bol, lol, J/K

Thanks for looking over my Protein shake. Glad to see it will suffice.

As for fiber, I would use some metamucil or psyllium husk, but then again when doing the AD in the past I don't recall any constipation; in fact I VIVIDLY recall the gift of the squirt that the AD bequeathed to me

I don't think you did anything wrong. Sometimes the system just does not know what to think about something - Nothing wrong as far as I can tell.
That looks like the right book to me.
So how about doing the Atkins diet right by including veggies and then moving up to OWL and adding more carbs. Perhaps that will make you more able to sustain your losses (which for some is the real challenge)

I do include the veggies; I eat all the induction approved veggies, but I just limit them.

OK... For my main meal, I eat at the Golden Corral every day so for example, today I had:

                        Chicken Caesar salad:
                        Grilled chicken breast - 0n/c
                        Caesar dressing - 1n/c
                        Blue cheese crumbles - 0.8n/c
                        Parmesan cheese - 0.6n/c

                        Veggies:
                        Green beans - 2.9n/c

                        Meat:
                        Sirloin stake - 0n/c

                        Fish:
                        Baked white fish
w/ shrimp & Lemon sauce - 6t/c not sure the net carb

                        Tea:
                        5 glasses Unsweet Iced - ?n/c

                        Diet Dr. Pepper:
                        3 cans (I think) - 0n/c
                        ================================

                        Total Net carbs - 11.3 -/+

As you can see, I am >20g of carbs for the day. One of my biggest issue I do have is eating only
once a day and that include MR's. I need to force/remind to eat every 2 to 3 hours, lol.

                            Hi sweetmeats,

I find I have more energy with my veggies when I am working out. I take L-Glutamine as a supplement for muscle recovery and it also works as an appetite depressant, glucosamine for my crummy knees, and fish oil because it is so good in so many ways. I have found chromium piccolinate and CLA don't really help me lose but do seem to help my losses stabilize faster instead on bouncing up and down on the scale. And if I bail they seem to slow down weight gains.

Oh there is no doubt that is I stick with carbs at >20/p/d that I will suffer from a lack of energy, but it all depends on how bad it gets. I am sure that I will utilize some supplements while I train; i will stick with what I know work in that area
