  • New Here and have IBS-D

I am 34 and have ibs-d with urgency for the last 3 yrs (It started 3 months after having my 3rd baby) although doctors are still running tests they all seem to come back negative. I have been hearing that eating low carb has helped other people with thier ibs issues and I do remember once when I did Atkins a few yrs back I didn't seem to have as many issues but I had never put two and two together. I usually eat no meat and mainly just carbs, so this is going to be a big change for me and could use all the advice and help I can get to get started. Anyone else here dealing with ibs-d?

Re: New Here and have IBS-D

Hi mrae. I'd never been officially diagnosed but I definitely suffered (suffer on rare occasions) from IBS-D. Since doing Atkins, most of my symptoms have gone away. I still sometimes have an attack, but it's typically if I eat something I'm not 100% sure what's in it (i.e. eating out), one of my trigger foods, or due to high anxiety (not often). It has helped for me to know my trigger foods (lactase for one, so I avoid most dairy though hard cheese and heavy cream in small doses are okay).

I highly recommend re-reading the book and revisiting the Induction sections here for tips and rules. Also visiting Linda's Low Carb website is great for recipes. Especially for IBS, I also recommend keeping a food diary, using something like Fitday, that will help with Atkins as well as may help pinpoint foods that may cause you problems. I like that it has a journal section that I sometimes use to note any issues such as IBS, pain, etc. that flared up that day.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

      Welcome to the Atkins Board.

I hope you already have the 2002 DANDR book and have read it, it is the edition we follow on this site. If not it's worth a few dollars to purchase. Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily, exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin. The new challenges are starting for the month -- check them out and join a couple that interest you.

Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html) - 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list daily. Rules of Induction: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What are the Rules of Induction?)

There are several recipe sites which will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- check them out!

          The DANDR book is
Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002) edition. It is the latest one he wrote and the one we use on this board. Yes you can probably find it in your local library. I see them often in used stores. I just saw someone say the other day she bought hers on ebay. All the good stuff is in there.

Amazon, ebay, used book stores--its all over the place for about 3 bucks. It will answer so many questions and keep you from making costly mistakes.
