  • New Here

Hi everyone, thought I would introduce myself. I'm Sims [that's actually my nickname that my family gave me]. I'm 37 and from Toronto.

I need to lose weight. I've always been heavy. I'm 350lbs and until very recently I was healthy. Yes, I know being that big isn't healthy in itself, but I didn't have any health issues.

I saw my doctor in July and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. We did a series of blood tests and for the first time ever my cholesterol came back elevated. I was devestated. I immediately changed how and what I was eating and noticed after 4 months I hadn't lost a pound. VERY discouraging.

So I thought I needed a change and I thought I needed to do something that I'm sure would work. Atkins. I know it's been proven effective and I really believe this will benefit me both with the cholesterol and with the FM/CFS.

So..I'm starting tomorrow. I'm taking tonight to re-read Atkins' book just to be sure I fully understand it.

    Hello and welcome!

There's a really great group on this board, always ready with a word of encouragement or advice, so please don't hesitate to post a question/concern/rant. I'm glad you're taking the time to read through the book - so many people start this Way of Eating/Way of Life going off of the website (which differs from the book we use) or what they've heard about the diet, but never crack open the book. That leads to my question - which book will you be using? Here on the board, we use Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002.

      Re: New Here

I have the 2002 edition. I purchased it a while ago, read it and then never followed through with the plan. I guess I wasn't ready for it then. I know the basics and I think I have a good grasp of it, but re-reading it won't hurt none

I understand that in editions after 2002 changes were made to the "diet" <-- I hate using that word. And after Dr. Atkins death, even more changes were made to promote the Atkins products - that's something I really don't want to use or rely on.

Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution is aptly named for a number of reasons, but one of them would be the "revolutionary" idea that a "diet" could - and should - become a way of eating that lasts for life. And yes, most on the board would agree that avoiding the group promoting the products is a pretty wise idea!

So, what do you have planned for breakfast/lunch/dinner tomorrow?

Welcome to the Atkins Board Sims.

Glad you found the board and are excited about staring. First of all, Atkins is not a "diet" - a diet is something you go on and off - Atkins is the way you eat the rest of your life. Once you learn how to eat this way you will wonder why you didn't start long before now. A few tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily, exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins so start now and get off on the right foot.

I'm glad you already have the 2002 DANDR book and have read it, it is the edition we follow on this site. The book is a great asset when you need answers and is something that if you read over and over you'll find things you forgot or didn't see the first time you read it.

Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list

                Re: New Here

For breakfast I plan to have scrambled eggs with homemade salsa. For lunch I've prepared chicken stir fry with bok choy and Chinese broccoli. I have to cook my veggies - I can't digest raw ones which is sad because I love salads. For snacking I've prepared devilled eggs and I have tuna salad ready too. Dinner isn't planned yet but it'll likely be chicken thighs wrapped with bacon and stuffed with a green veg of some sort.

                  Re: New Here

Just popping in to say hello. Hello! How are you feeling today? Your meal plan looked very good - all nice & legal. I would definitely advise keeping a food diary on Nutrition Data (my fav) or FitDay (liked by many on the board), so you get a good feel for how you are nourishing yourself and are generally hitting 20 net carbs with most of those carbs coming from veggies.

I dearly love salads, too - I would be quite sad if I had to cook all my veggies! Fortunately, there are plenty of tasty ways to cook veggies. Plus, so many are allowed during Induction, you could have new ones each day and never have the same one twice.

One of my favorite dishes is a simple stir fry. Peanut oil, meat (I love shrimp), garlic, ginger (I have a little jar of minced), bell pepper, mushroom, zucchini, soy sauce. At first, I *really* missed having rice on the side. Now that I'm three rungs away from incorporating rice back into my diet...I find that I'm not even slightly interested in having it anymore. It's almost as if the rice would get in the way of my yummy veggies!
