I have been "big" for most of my life. Having spent many hours throughout 25 of my 40 years in the gym, I chalked up my largeness to that lifestyle. However, at 5'9" and pushing 300 lbs, I passed the limit. I hardly had a reason to be so large; my calorie consumption was in the 2,500/day range (BMI calculator revealed that I had to take in almost 4,000 calories per day to maintain my weight - I was at almost HALF that!) I was active as well (tennis and weights.)
I always thought the Atkins approach was b.s., so I never paid much attention to the hype. No doctors could ever give me reasons beyond "metabolic resistance" as to why I was so overweight. I started to research on my own and when I looked at my carbohydrate consumption, I found that it was WAAAY over the top (bread and starch with EVERY MEAL.) I connected the dots and realized that grains (whole wheat, whole grain, white...didn't matter), starches, and my body do not work well together.
One week on low-carb lifestyle and I am down to 287 (from 294). I also feel great; like I spent most of my life fighting my way through muck, only to be freed in my mid life. This approach WORKS...granted, it's not for everyone but it works for me and that's what is important. Thanks in advance for support.
