  • Newby from Italy

Hello there, nice to meet you.
My name is Tere and I am from Italy, specifically from sunny Naples.
I weight 77.7 kg now and I aim to get down to 60 in 2010.
This is my first time on the atkins diet, but without knowing I had already been following a sort of low carb diet prescripted from my doctor last year. At that time I felt great, but I decided not to go back to the same doctor and diet and choose atkins because I had been given some appetite suppressants, that I hope I won t need this time. My mother has type II diabetes, and I am determined not to go down the same road, I live with her and being both on a diet I find it is not that difficoult to stick to the program while I am at home. It s a different story when going to aunt's house though.
Oh, and I feel hungry all the time.
I am on day 4 of induction now, and I have been reading the forum for quite a while before deciding to jump in.

So, I am determined to see this through and I thank you in advance for your support

        Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Glad you found the board, first of all, Atkins is not a "diet" it's a way of eating over a lifetime. You don't need appetite supprescents while following Atkins because once you get into keotsis you'll find you aren't really hungry and will have to remember to eat. Once you learn the correct way to eat this way you will wonder why you didn't start long before now.

A few tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins so start now and get off on the right foot.

Make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal (2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution [DANDR]), eat only the foods on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables.
        (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

You shouldn't be hungry -- have something with fat and protein when you feel hungry (meat dipped in mayonaise or cream cheese for example) - while you're on induction you should never be hungry -- if you need to eat smaller meals closer together instead of 3 meals a day. Make sure you are only eating foods on the acceptable foods list - nothing else.

        Good luck to you!

Hi Tere and welcome from another member who lives in lovely Italy (Umbria)

Carole is right... you won't need appetite suppressants on this plan. Ketosis will curb your appetite just fine!
You say you feel hungry all the time. Do you mean now, or before you started Atkins? You shouldn't go hungry on this programme. The trick is to eat to satisfy your hunger, no more no less, of foods that are legal to the Atkins phase you are at.

              Happy losing, neighbour!

                Re: Newby from Italy

Thanks to all for your concern!
About my hunger, you see I have a very distorted conception of food portions.
I am used to having very large portions. In my family, we keep considering a normal portion like a small portion and a big portion like a normal portion. So I feel like I didn t have enough even after I ate to satisfaction.
Now that I think of it, it may not be real hunger, just a consequence of my distorted conception of portions...

I do not regularly consume junk food, just sporadically, so my greatest problem with weight loss is portion control.

For instance, I had 2 medium chicken drumsticks and 250 grams ( !!) of eggplant for lunch today. And that made me feel satisfied not stuffed!!! So after a few hours I will search for something else to eat. And needless to say, I am concerned about calorie intake.

But, I realize I do not crave sugary stuff or breads at all anymore. That s good!
