  • Hello

I'm Jason from WV. This is my second time actually doing anything with Atkins. The first time I lost around 40 lbs, I gained 5 back and have lost more than the 5 again in a little over a week. Hoping to stay on induction till I get down to close to where I desire to be. I'm learning that their are all kinds of things you can eat even while on induction. I guess sometime that is the problem with induction and people staying on it, boredom with the food. Anyway, glad to be here, happy to be able to associate with other people on the Atkins diet, or lifestyle, what ever you wish to call it. Thanks,
    Jason

    Welcome, Jason!

I don't know what exactly you mean by "close", but it might not be the best strategy. Dr. Atkins told us that the last 5-10 lbs should be lost in Pre-Maintenance. And between Induction and Pre-Maintenance there is OWL. Most of our weight should be lost during OWL and this phase takes longer than a few weeks (for some of us, it takes years!).

Yes, I have the book, but I will probably stay on induction till probably the last 20 lbs or so. I need to get this stress off of my joints as quickly as possible so as they say, drastic times call for drastic measures. As long as I do it and do it healthy I don't see a problem.

Thanks for the reply by the way, very nice to meet you!!

The 2nd phase of Atkins is called Ongoing Weight Loss for a reason ...

          Re: Hello

Many people make the mistake of thinking that staying on Induction means you lose more quickly when, in fact, a lot of people boost their weight loss by moving to OWL. The first couple of rungs generally fuel your loss. It also provides you with added variety to prevent the boredom you describe and teaches you which foods are likely triggers of cravings, etc. Give it some thought. Staying on Induction usually doesn't make things go any faster once you get out of the initial few weeks.

Why is this your second take? Were your joints are not as important before? What will you do if you practice Extended Induction and find that your weight loss has stalled? [search for the key word "stall" on this board...see how many were on Extended Induction when they stalled, and the advice they got...]

              Re: Hello

Get enough pure water in daily (64oz minimum is recommended), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin. Re-read the OWL section of the book so you understand why you should move to OWL and not stay on induction until you're almost to your goal. You will continue to loose weight during OWL - it doesn't stop when you start adding foods back - and it's the way Dr. Atkins intended us to follow his plan.

Check this page for answers to a lot of your questions: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html. Make sure you are eating enough vegetables – Atkins isn’t just meat and cheese – vegetables are a huge part of your daily menu and is where most of your carbs should be coming from.

I got side tracked before, that's the reason for my second take. My eating habits didn't get horrible like they were before, hence the 5lbs gained instead of 30 or 40. My joints were not as important before, I'm having some really bad problems with my shoulders and knees that have gotten worse. Also, I am having tingling sensations in my arms at night while trying to sleep, almost like pent up energy trying to get out, I'm hoping loosing more weight will help that, I thought possibly it was sugar doing it to me, but I should be detoxed by now surely after almost 2 weeks?

Thank you all for your replies, I do not want to come off like a know it all, and indeed I will go back and read the book yet again. I would imagine people who have been following this for years would trump me in knowledge quiet easily.

Have you seen your physician about this?

Ditto Georgiana's question - did you go see a doctor about this? I would hate for you to dedicate yourself to weight loss assuming that will solve this...then find that it doesn't. That's too darn long to live in pain for naught.

You should get checked out for carpal tunnel ... this could be a repetitive motion issue.

This particular problem no I haven't, my doctor would just add another couple of percocet to the pills I already take. If this continues I'm going to have to go to another doc, but I really need to loose the weight anyway. I weighed 165lbs when I got married, I was up 130lbs from that at one point. I doubt I'll ever loose that much but I'd love to be that thin again!

My doctor said I have a problem coming from the nerve on the opposite side of the hand, it's something like carpal tunnel , but this is coming from my shoulder area down from the feel of things. I fell a year ago or so and hit the spigot right square between the shoulder blades on my spine, I don't remember having those problems before then.
