  • Eager to make a lasting change

Hi everyone, I've decided to give the atkins a try. I officially start today but my dinner last night was a low carb test run and I woke to a 1lb weight loss
I take that as a good sign. I've been overweight since I was 7yrs old and up until then I had been very skinny and a picky eater. I started to gain weight when my mum became very ill and was extremely anxious as no was telling me anything and pretending everything was okay even though I could tell it wasn't.

My mum ended up going away to receive treatment for her tumor and that summer I started eating bread, margarine and jam sandwiches about half a loaf a day. When we went to visit my grandparents that x-mas my whole extended family was shocked because I had always been underweight until then. My parents bought a book on how to help your child lose weight and have been nagging to lose weight ever since then.
I'm very aware that my over-eating is a result of my anxiety which I'm working on. I lost 30lbs two years ago by basically starving myself and the weight came back when I had came under stress and could no longer keep up with fasting.

I've decided to try atkins because my diet consists mostly of bread, rice, pasta and anything baked, and I know for a fact that eating bread is what started my weight gain in the first place. I'm living at home right now and its a daily battle with my family about my weight. I'm the only heavy one in my family and the youngest so not a day goes by that I don't get a lecture from 3 different people about my weight. I know its not a good thing to be motivated by anger but I'm hoping that if I can shed some weight I can get some peace. I'm lucky to not have health problems, blood work and blood pressure are fine. But I know that its only because I'm young and if I don't change now I won't be so lucky further down the road.

I'm sure atkins will work because its the only program that I researched that doesn't put emphasize the foods that I can't stop myself from eating.

If you managed to read the whole thing, THANKS!

Welcome to ADBB. Just to caution you--this is not something to "try". For Atkins to be successful you need to commit to this as a lifestyle choice, not a temporary fix. The best way to proceed is to get the book and do this right! There are a lot of mistakes to be made if you do not understand the ins and outs of this plan. We use the 2002 DANDR book on this site. If you don't have the book you should at least read the stickies in the Induction and Extened Induction forums.

You can do this, this will work for you, just stick to it no matter what. If you have to have something, eat something allowed. You will see results and be able to get a life that you've never experienced before. I understand the emotional eating. I'm not sure why I over eat, I mainly relate food with fun and satisfaction. I love baking, I love eating, I love creating goodies and foods I am not suppose to have. Once I get into Atkins I do quite well but then there are those days.

Right now I'm struggling. Just wanting things I cannot have. Tonight I cooked porkchops with onions, mushrooms, celery and a tid bit of an alfredo sauce for substance. It was simply divine. Filling up on a food that was allowed stopped me from caving. I hope to hear more from you. Hugs

Thanks for the support! I've got the book and I'm currently on the "exercise is non-negotiable" chapter. I thought it was a catch phrase when I was lurking around on the forums didn't realize it was an actual chapter LOl

            Welcome to the Atkins Board.

I'm glad you found the board and are excited about starting the plan. First of all, Atkins is not a "diet" it's a way of eating over a lifetime. Once you learn how to eat this way you will wonder why you didn't start long before now. A few tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins (as you have read in the book) so start now and get off on the right foot.

Eat only the foods on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables.
