  • Hello Everyone!

I have taken the plunge, and it's been really great!

I love food - but it has controlled me for 10 years, since trying to loose weight after my second child was born.

I've done every type of calorie controlled diet and done well and then once I loose my focus, I start CRAVING everything I know I can't eat - but mostly chocolate.

At the beginning of November I started giving up coffee and coke and after 2 weeks of feeling awful I kicked the habit. I knew I'd have to give up caffine before I started Atkins and knowing how hard it would be to do both together I decided to do it in 2 stages.

Giving up caffine was a 100 times harder than my first 7 days on Induction. Infact I have enjoyed every meal I have had. It is so much easier than counting points, calories and syns.

I have NO cravings - except for my love of cheese - BUT I can eat cheese, so it's not a problem.

I have read the book and am really focused and clear about everything EXCEPT for 2 things, and this could just be a US/UK anomaly BUT:

    1) It says in the Atkins book that:

"you can consume 90-110g of cheese and the rule of thumb is to count 30g of cheese as 1g of carb"

but the nutrition labels on the food packaging say there's only 0.1g of (net) carb per 100g THIS IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE - WHY? Is cheese in the US that different from UK cheeses? or am I missing something?

    2) Can I have other cheeses similar to Cheddar - like Red Leicester, Cheshire and Wensleydale OR is the list of cheeses in the book IT as far as the Induction phase goes? What's so different about Cheddar?

I know it's a funny time of year to start the Diet, with Christmas on the way, but I just know that the Chocolate will take me over, and I just couldn't cope with the thought of starting 2010 with the same only promises to overcome my cravings.

I hope someone can help me out here.

    Thank you

    Re: Hello Everyone!

    Welcome to the Atkins Board.

A few tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins so start now and get off on the right foot. Also, start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/

As far as cheese goes this is what I've always gone by:

    Cheese
You can consume three to four ounces daily of the following full-fat, firm, soft and semi-soft aged cheeses*, including:

    cheddar
    cow, sheep and goat cheese
    cream cheese
    Gouda
    mozzarella
    Roquefort and other blue cheeses
    Swiss
*All cheeses have some carbohydrate content. The quantity you eat should be governed by that knowledge. The rule of thumb is to count 1 ounce of cheese as equivalent to 1 gram of carbohydrate. Note that cottage cheese, farmer's cheese and other fresh cheeses are not permitted during Induction. No "diet" cheese, cheese spreads or whey cheeses are permitted. Individuals with known yeast symptoms, dairy allergy or cheese intolerance must avoid cheese. Imitation cheese products are not allowed, except for soy or rice cheese but check the carbohydrate content.

    Good luck to you!

      Re: Hello Everyone!

I would guess that other hard cheese can be used in addition to cheddar. But do limit it to 3-4 ounces regardless of the carb count listed. Cheese tends to be a big staller for some folks, and often the packages aren't as accurate as you may thing.

Because in the US, the labels are allowed to round down in the nutritional information, so the label often says "0"... which isn't true, but the law says they can do it, so they do. It's not just with cheese ... it's with everything!

And 3-4 ounces converts to 85-113 (rounded) grams.

              Thank you for your replies.

I will definately "watch the cheese"!

I'm on track with the water (have to drink it hot coz it's freezing outside) but I'm getting a taste for it, sort of! and am taking multivitamins (NON-IRON for obvious reasons!!)

THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT!! - FEELING GOOD!
