  • May I join?

Hello everyone. I have been lurking for the last week. Quietly inspired by all of you and recognizing so many things in myself that I did not realize were so common.

I resisted the urge to join because I am not that overweight. I thought that might be offensive to some. However, my Mom is quite heavy and I see me having similar symptoms. Everytime I climb up even 10 or 20 lbs I completely run out of energy and I am shaky and tired all the time. I have watched my precious Mom struggle with that for years and she feels like its hopeless (I am encouraging her as well). We both have small frames (underneath anyway) and I am much like her. Because of that I fight hard to keep my weight down.

What I need help with is stopping with all the dieting and beginning a new way of life. I am 30 years old now and I know if I keep up this yo yo I am setting myself up for big problems later. Also I want to set a good example for my kids. My son is doing great. He loves fruits and veggies and doesn't really like high carb stuff all that much. My 3 year old daughter is much like me. She loves it. Right now she is tiny and not at all overweight. She is perfect. I was that way all through childhood and highschool. I want to teach her good habits now so she won't end up with this struggle. I want to know what the balance is. How can I introduce this style of eating to the whole family without making any of them feel deprived?

    Thank you for listening.

It definitely isn't, since Atkins is not only a tool to lose weight. Welcome to ADBB!

Good job for deciding to change your way of eating and stop dieting!

I would suggest you to read Atkins for Life.

I normally don't feel deprived at all on Atkins. When I do, it is my mistake, not the WoE's... and I know that what I need to do is try new recipes.

Oh, and WoE = Way of Eating.

        Deprived of what? Junk food?

Why do your children need junk?

Georgiana, thanks for the tip. I will try to pick up Atkins for life this next weekend.

AtkinsGal, you are right that what they will miss is junk. I just want to keep my picky 3 year old eating and I am most concerned about getting my dh onboard. He is a carb junky and has been supportive of me doing what I like, but I better not try to mess with him. I am most worried about my biggest baby feeling deprived

Anyone have any ideas on how to convince a spouse to leave huge plates of mash potatoes, and 4 dinner rolls in a sitting behind?

Make creamed mashed cauliflower, or creamed turnips.....my husband doesn't even miss potatoes when either of those is on the table.

Try several recipes on your family - I didn't like stuffed green peppers but my husband did, so I tried them using Linda's recipe and found I DO like them so it's a meal we can all eat together.

Getting children to eat healthy early in life is easier than waiting until they are older --- if junk isn't in the house he won't miss it after a few days.

It's easier to get everyone to eat the same way but that's up to you. If you can find things you're husband and children will eat along with you it will be eaiser for you in the long run.

Look at the recipe sites, Linda's has many wonderful recipes made with vegetables, good soup recipes, wonderful main dishes....give them a try.

Also, don't forget to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of plain water everyday, exercise and take a multi-vitamin without iron. Reading the book will also give you the information you need to be successful.

            Good luck.
