  • Hello!

My name is Valkyrie, and yes that is my real name.

I enjoyed a lifetime of being thin, no weight issues ever until the last few years. I guess it's the middle aged thing (I'm 42) and my metabolism is no longer my friend.

I am in good health, but my weight affects my mood and mental wellbeing. I would really like to get back to where I was so I can love my body again. And tie my shoes without my stomach getting in the way!

I'm going to try Atkins because actually my doctor recommended it. He said that studies have shown this type of diet is the best way to lose/maintain weight. And the fact that you lose fast at first can help keep your motivation going.

I have tried calorie restriction, but it just doesn't work for me. I mean it does...just not long term. I can't go around feeling hungry all the time. It makes me a terrible person to be around.

I'm not sure how this will go. I'm not into sugar AT ALL so that won't be a problem for me. I am, however, really into salty things. Salty and carbolicious, like potato chips, corn chips, chips, chips, chips! Not like I eat them every day, but I really do love potato anything at all. And dairy--milk and cheese are staples in my diet. Mmmmmmmm cheese! Oh, and I love wine a lot. And pasta. Yeah--potatoes, pasta, cheese, and wine. Those will be hard to give up. Really hard.

But I'm willing to give it a shot!

    Re: Hello!

    First off...

    Coolest. Name. Ever.

I'm only a year younger than you, and I started up Atkins for similar reasons, I think.

You and I share the EXACT same weaknesses! Luckily, you can eat cheese from the beginning, and milk and more cheese later on. (Did I mention we can have cheese? MMM, Cheeessssseeee...) Oh, and it's not that waxy low fat stuff either, it's the real deal!

Keep within the rules, but here's a great salty crunchy substitute for chips:

Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes

I will "save" my cheese "allowance" just for this at the end of a day as a treat. I like it with muenster best, but cheddar is awesome too.

Also - I like crunchy veggies (like cabbage) as a snack to satisfy that urge as well...

It was hard to give up the potatoes and pasta - you'll get some of that back later (Dreamfields pasta is awesome, btw) but hopefully the journey will teach you to keep it under control!

Welcome to ADBB and your Atkins journey!

        Re: Hello!

        Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Glad you found the board and are excited about starting the plan. Make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal. If you can’t find a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) locally check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com. Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables. (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs) http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

A few more tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins so start now and get off on the right foot. Also, start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/

When you want something salty you can legally eat olives or no sugar pickles -- both salty foods that many of us use to get through those times. Check the cauliflower recipes on Linda's site for all kinds of starch substitutes....the mock-a-foni & cheese & loaded cauliflower dishes are staples in my life! I don't miss potatoes now.

To make sure you don’t become bored by eating the same thing over and over look at these wonderful recipe sites – we have such great choices for menu ideas, eat a variety of things:
