  • Another Newbie from London :(

    Hi guys!

It's day 5 of me being in induction (after three weeks of weaning myself off of carbs) and I've gained 6 lbs. I'm incredibly distraught. Binge eating cream cheese right now. I'm incredibly disheartened, the headaches won't stop and all I can think about is how I just keep on getting fatter.

I was supposed to have a lap band put in, but my insurance won't cover it. I'm getting more and more depressed and I just don't know where to go from here.

I have been as big as I am now (when I was still in my teens) and I was given Phentermine. I lost weight very quickly and kept it off until last year (when I was pregnant and threw caution to the wind and ate!) Now I've got a baby, and the belly. Although my baby is cute, my belly isn't.

I do have a thyroid problem, but my doctors don't see much of a problem with being on thyroid medication and on atkins at the same time. Does anyone have any other advice?

It's not the first time I've done atkins, I tried in March with Dr. Fine in London and I gained weight back then too, but he told me to drink lots of orange juice with the meat as well...which I think is why I gained the 11lbs. I kept gaining weight and my doctor said my problem must be psychological which really hurt, because I did exactly as he said.

    Welcome to ADBB!

It's day 5 of me being in induction (after three weeks of weaning myself off of carbs) and I've gained 6 lbs.
If you want to post a complete menu, we can take a look. Please include quantities and net carbs for every food.

Binge eating cream cheese right now.
Some things are better left unfinished. That package of cream cheese is one of them.

You'd do better eating some vegetables.

    the headaches won't stop
Did they start when you started Atkins or did you have them before as well?

I tried in March with Dr. Fine in London and I gained weight back then too, but he told me to drink lots of orange juice with the meat as well
Umm... meat and orange juice is definitely NOT Atkins!

Here is what I've eaten these past few days:

      December 8th

Ground beef meatballs (beef only) with olive oil, salt and vinegar carbs: 0.0
Eggs scrambled made from large eggs, carbs: 2.6
Cheese (cheddar) one slice carbs: 1.1

      December 9th
      1 cup eggplant; carbs: 4.2
      ground lamb; carbs: 0.0
beef steak 150 grams; carbs: 0.0
      Thanks Georgina,

I've listed what I've eaten these past few days.

      December 10th
      meatballs; carbs: 0.0
3 slices of cheese; carbs: 3.4
      chicken 2oz; carbs:0.0

      December 11th
      2oz chicken; carbs: 0.0
4 Hard boiled eggs; carbs: 2.2
      Beef steak 150g; carbs: 0.0

      December 12th
      meatballs; carbs 0.0
      2 oz chicken; carbs 0.0
      3oz chicken breast/vegetables

can't find the carbs on the stirfry vegetables-- heated them in a wok with a little bit of olive oil.
i've also had one tablespoon of cream cheese (just now)

the rest has been documented in my fitday food calender thing. Where am I going wrong?

As far as Dr. Fine is concerend-- he claimed that orange juice could safely be substituted for vegetables. But it had to be sugar free, fresh squeezed. Nonetheless, he didn't work.

My headaches-- I get them now and then when I'm not on the atkins diet, but lately I've had them almost every day. My ketostix aren't changing color either. (and they used to last week).

Okay. So, first of all, you need vegetables. Atkins is not a zero carbs diet. During Induction you eat 20 net carbs (total carbs minus dietary fiber), with the majority of them coming from vegetables.

Not eating vegetables can actually cause you to gain weight.

          Also... are you constipated?

Cheese (cheddar) one slice carbs: 1.1
How big is that slice? Cheddar typically has something like 0.4 net carbs per 30 g.

          meatballs; carbs 0.0
Did you buy these or did you make them yourself?

Did you use spices? Spices have carbs.

I believe you also need more fat in your diet. During Induction, approximately 60-70% of one's total daily calories should come from fat. Atkins is not a high protein diet.

can't find the carbs on the stirfry vegetables-- heated them in a wok with a little bit of olive oil.
Did you buy some frozen mix? Then the carbs should be written on the label. And since you are in the UK, the carbs on the label are net carbs, not total carbs... so you should not subtract dietary fiber from them.

You also need to make sure that all the ingredients in the mix are appropriate for Induction. Check the Accpetable Foods List.

If you prepared the veggies yourself (from fresh vegetables), then you enter all the ingredients separately in FitDay.

I am assuming you don't have the book. The one you need to read is Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002).

In the meantime, these links should help you get started:

Oh boy... No, that of course doesn't work. Too bad you had to find it out the hard way. There is the natural sugar in oranges which will contribute with quite a lot of carbs to your diet. On Atkins, oranges are only added in OWL Rung 7 (the fruits rung). And it's better to eat the fruit... there is no fiber in juice.

lately I've had them almost every day
The lack of vegetables and/or excess protein can both cause headaches.

Also make sure you are consuming enough calories for your weight.

My ketostix aren't changing color either. (and they used to last week).
Ketostix are not reliable. Once you start following the plan correctly, I'm sure you'll lose weight regardless of the color of the sticks.

              Re: Another Newbie from London

I do have the book (but an online ebook copy so it's not complete, but gets me to page 230 before cutting off)-- which means I don't get any recipes.

the cheese slices are actually cheese chunks that i'm getting from the cheese counters at the supermarket and I'm getting the carb cntent from the sticker they hasten the wrapping with. I buy in 3oz increments because it's easier to keep track of daily portions during the day. I'm probably getting it all wrong though.

Thank you for the links, I'm going to read through them now and hopefully I'll be able to fix my issues.

              Georgiana,
thank you very much for reading my posts and replying. It's hard to relay how I feel to everyone in my life, no one I'm close to has ever had to lose weight before.
