  • Marhaba from Qatar! Not-so-newbie

    Hii people!

I am Mohammed from Qatar and I am struggling with my weight my whole life. I gained 20 kilos from my "thin" weight record (which was still overweight), and now I am deeply depressed.

I started Atkins 5 days ago, and since then, I think I have lost something, but I was too scared to measure my weight! I tried Atkins before and it really does work.

But lately, i have been feeling depressed, malnourished, lazy, and hungry since I started this diet. Is it normal?

    Wish me luck people!

What caused you to stop Atkins?

    depressed
Possibly sugar withdrawal... Giving up your "favorite" foods is not always easy.

    malnourished
Not normal. We can take a look at your menu if you mention quantities and net carbs for all the foods you eat.

    lazy
Feeling a bit tired can happen during the first days of Induction. You need to make sure you are eating enough, both calories and net carbs.

Drinking enough water is also important.

    hungry
Not normal. Why don't you eat something?

Its hard to tell why you are feeling the way you are without seeing a menu with amounts and specific information on what you have been eating. I agree with what Georgiana has said. You should not be feeling malnourished and hungry. Often that means you have eaten something off plan that is causing those feelings. Post a menu and see if we can help you figure it out.

Georgina and China Doll, Thanks for your replies!

To Tell you the truth, I gained about 1 kg since I started Atkins and I think what I was eating was wrong.

Let me tell you what I am eating, and I know it wrong!! But I am really depressed that I gained a kilo!

Breakfast: 3 eggs omelete with Kraft creme cheese spread liberally
        Lipton Tea with 2 splendas

Lunch: I ate these Meat kababs with ground minced meat, spices, onions, cheese and apparently bread crumbs (which I just knew about yesterday!) But, the cook said that there was little breadrumbs used. The amount eaten was a lot! I dont know how much exactly but a lot.

And if you guys are familar with Indian Panyeer Tikka Cheese (its a form of Cottage cheese barbeqed on a stick) Ate a lot of that.

Dinner: I just eat Nandos chicken on the long stick (dont know what you call them) or Applebees steaks with vegetables!

SOmetimes for dinner I would fry frozen Hamburger and Hallomi Cheese (goats-milk cheese) which are quite tasty.

        _____

Its all wrong, I know! I really want to hit myself for this.

Perhaps why Im feeling depressed is because of sugar withdrawal.Cause literally the day before the diet I was binge eating fast foods and cakes and brownies!

Im depressed, really, please help me!

The thing is, it's not the first kg you ever gained... and it surely won't be the last, even once you start following Atkins correctly.

So instead of being "really depressed", better figure out what is wrong and improve your next meal.

          Kraft creme cheese spread
Is this simply cream cheese or some cheese spread? If it's cheese spread, you'd better check the ingredients. Usually it's really processed stuff.

          liberally
Cheese is limited to 3-4 oz per day.

the cook said that there was little breadrumbs used
ANY amount of breadcrumbs would make it not allowed during Induction.

And if you guys are familar with Indian Panyeer Tikka Cheese (its a form of Cottage cheese barbeqed on a stick) Ate a lot of that.
Cottage cheese is only allowed from OWL Rung 2 on. And if you did not make this yourself, then it might have flour in it.

          Nandos chicken
Do you make these yourself? If not, do you know what are the ingredients?

          Applebees steaks
They likely have sugar. Shocking... I know.

          with vegetables
          What vegetables?

Do you have a copy of the Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)?

          Also read these stickies:

How many net carbs are you eating from vegetables only?

And how many net carbs are you consuming in total?

            Are you counting your carbs?

How much water (not tea, coffee... just pure water) are you drinking?

It's better to spread your net carbs (mostly from vegetables!) throughout the day.

              Hi Marhaba,

Unfortunately those tasty ground meat kebabs need some bread crumbs to help hold then together so they can be skewered and cooked.

Regarding that Applebee's steak, next time you go there, ask them to bring you the box they receive the steaks in, tell them you want to read the ingredients. Since they are a chain, hopefully the steaks are from a supplier that has that info on it. It does here in the US.

Many steak items at these chains inject some form of sugar into them. And sometimes the seasonings added at the time of cooking can have sugar as one if the ingredients.

Well, I read the ingredients for the cream cheese, and yes its the processed cheese with sugar in it! I had no idea that you can have cheese with sugar in it. Ill just use regular old cheddar cheese.

No, Im not cooking, but ill make a trip to the supermarket and buy things that I need; I think its better.

                    Hi again Marhaba,

Here is a list that I got from our ADBB, that contains other names of sugar, or other forms of sugar. These names are sometimes used more often than the actual word "Sugar."

Here's some of the many names of sugar: Sucralose IS OK.
                    • Brown sugar
                    • Cane syrup
                    • Corn sweetener
                    • Corn syrup
                    • Corn syrup solids
                    • Dextrose
                    • Fructose
                    • Fruit juice concentrate
                    • Galactose
                    • Glucose
                    • High-fructose corn syrup
                    • Honey
                    • Invert sugar
                    • Lactose
                    • Malt
                    • Maltose
                    • Malt syrup
                    • Maple syrup
                    • Molasses
                    • Raw sugar
                    • Rice syrup

Processed cheese I understand... but is there sugar listed as an ingredient or does it appear only on the nutritional label. If it's the sugar on the nutritional label, then it is natural sugar coming from milk. All milk products have some sugar (lactose) in them. Tomatoes have sugar too... yet they are okay to eat during Induction.

Ill just use regular old cheddar cheese.
Cheddar is fine. Make sure you count the carbs. Many people think cheddar has no carbs... but they are wrong.

Yep, definitely better! That way you'll know what you eat and can measure your foods, rather than guesstimate.

THis is shocking, but I will sure ask them first. Ill check the Applebees website for carbs and calories. Perhaps they know.

SO yesterday I sat down and reexamined what I have been eating...the only thing that stuck out at me, was that in the past 2 weeks, things have been really busy and we have been eating out a lot. we have gone to applebees's. I have the same thing...salad dry, and a house sirloin with blue chees on it. Probably about 4 times wekk for the last 2 weeks, they are so good, I would order and extra to go and have it for breakfast the next day.

SO I get online at Applebees.com and look to see if there is something in those steaks that woulde be stalling me. Now I am thinking, unless there is some small amount of sugar inthe seasoning the steaks should be a no brainer. Well the web site says no nutritional info available.

I called corporate Applebees, and they tell me that I need to call the local restraunt to ask them to look on the box of staeks for the ingredents. I call the local resturant, and they go look. Not only is sugar the 2nd ingredent ( beef being the first ) but they are injected with a dextrose solution too!!! I am so angry!!! angry at myself for blindly thinking that a steak is a stek...and applebees for shootingit full of sugar!!!
I changed my diet yesterday and made sure I did not have those extra carbs that I didnt need, and Ill see if I lost weight yesterday.
What you eat today does not necessarily reflect in the number you see on the scale tomorrow. Be patient.

                              G.

"Salam wa aleikum" is Arabic for Peace be with you. It is used as a greeting.

In Farsi, Salam aleikum. The same thing, a greeting that is like saying hello.
