  • Today is the first day of the rest of my life

    Hello,

I recently hit 222lbs, and I think that I need to get back under the double century mark. I think a heathly weight for me would be 185lbs as I am 6'1. I am 32yrs now and before when I was gaining weight, I could just exercise extra and lose it quick. That has not been happening the last few years. First, my work, family, lazyiness have all increased so I haven't been able to exercise as much as I have liked. Second, I think my metabolism has just slowed down.

Two weeks ago I went online and learned about the diet online. I think I have the first 14 days all planned out, and I couldn't wait for jan 1st. My wife is going to try along with me.

Last night I cleaned out my fridge and pantry. A challege for me is going to be no alcohol, so I drank all the beer in my frigde I went to costco and I got alot of chicken breasts, ground turkey meat, heathier saugauge and bacon. I grilled up a few days worth for lunches. I think the hot dogs are 167 calories, the turkey burgers are about 300 calories, not sure the steak, but I divided a ny strip over three luch containers. I estimate that I have 3 1000 calorie containers the next three days. I skipped breakfast this morning, but I guess I will normally do bacon and eggs. My wife will prepare chicken breasts and 1 cup of broccli for dinners. I am not sure the right calorie count for me each day yet. I am going to keep a log of what I eat everyday.

I think that I am clear on the first 14 days, not carbs, sugar, caffine or alcohol. 1 cup of the approved veg a day. broccoli and spinich were the only ones I recognized, so that is what I am going to start with. If I get sick of those, I will branch out. I read the post by the admin, and I think that I have taken all those steps. I have my wife playing along, friends all know, and I have separated my kids foods from my food. Aside from reading the atkins book and having the physical, I think I have taken most of the steps.

I never thought of joining a blog, but in my search for info on the web lead me here and hopefully you guys can help keep me on track. I will have vitamin questions later.

    thanks for the help!

    Welcome!

    >>I went online and learned about the diet online>>

From where? Not all information online is correct!

You really need a copy of the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)

    >> I think that I am clear on the first 14 days, not carbs, sugar, caffine or alcohol.>>

    Atkins is NOT "no carbs".

    >>1 cup of the approved veg a day>>

    Nope.

    Please read:

Thanks for the guidence, just what I was looking for!

      Thanks J!

I was just going to eat a cup of broccoli with dinner, now I am going to add 2 cups of spinich. Thanks for the help, I do plan on picking up the book soon. So far today I have had 2 of 8 glasses of water. Half a hot dog and a turkey burger. I am going to try to eat the 4 to 5 meals a day. Next will be the other half of that hot dog, and a 1/3 of a NY strip. Then Dinner will be chicken breast, 1 cup broccoli, 2 cups spinich, multi vitamin. repeat until wed.

My snacks are going to be hard boiled eggs sometimes with the yolk, sometimes without, the hot dogs, which are 167 calories.

I can tell you know what you are doing, and I appreicate the help. I have been reading the posts of others starting today, and I think I am better prepared than most. However, it must be rough for you to have me post "I haven't read the book yet, but plan too" The links you posted are great and similar to what I have read.

      Thanks again!

Re: Today is the first day of the rest of my life

Hiya, welcome, read the book, good job getting prepared, read the book, glad your wife is joining you (it makes it a LOT easier), read the book, and hope you find ADBB helpful!

Be careful with things like hot dogs and bacon and some pre-processed lunch meats - they can have sugars that are a problem for some people. Be sure to count those carbs.

Also - unless you like ground turkey better, you know you can go ahead and have the real deal ground beef, right? (I personally like a certain brand of turkey bacon better than pork bacon, so I can understand if you do).

Tip: I like to make a ground beef patty, then stir-fry 4 oz green cabbage with 1/2 tbsp of butter in the grease, with pepper, just long enough for it to get hot as the side veggie. YUM.

Did I mention - read the book?

Re: Today is the first day of the rest of my life

Learn to read the ingredients in everything you eat. Most hotdogs (other than Nathan's and Hebrew National) have fillers that aren't allowed so technically no matter how many calories they have you shouldn't eat them. Same thing with the turkey burgers....what's in them other than turkey? Learn all the different names of hidden sugars.

If you can’t find a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) locally check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com. Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables. (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs) http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

A few more tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins so start now and get off on the right foot. Also, start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/

To make sure you don’t become bored by eating the same thing over and over look at these wonderful recipe sites – we have such great choices for menu ideas, eat a variety of things:

Re: Today is the first day of the rest of my life

Thanks for the tips and the support. I picked up the book and started reading it yesterday.

I don't know if my multi vitamin is non-iron, I will check. I made my own turkey burger from ground turkey, salt, pepper, and italian seasoning. I chose that over ther ground beef because I figured the lower fat content would be good. the ground meat that costco had was 12% fat. My turkey burgers are great and I dont' feel I am giving anything. I need to double check those hot dogs too, but I did buy the hebrew national type, and paid close attention to the content.

My biggest thing is just craving the carbs, the chocolate, and the beer/wine. went I was tempted last night, I just threw another chicken breast on the george foreman and ate that.

As I am reading the book, I am seeing some lemon juice and spices are ok though I am still steering clear at this point. What about vinegar though? one of my favorite sauces is free of sugar and carbs, but there is alot of vinegar in it. Is that Ok? I also like red hot, and I think that is ok now too.

thanks for the support, I have been logging my weight, everything I eat, and I will post that the log.

                Enjoy, it's very enlightening!

Remember, on Atkins, lower fat content does not equal good all the time. If you want ground beef, you can have it, and it's all good. This is a high fat, medium protein, low carb diet.

That turkey burger mix does sound good though, for using in some applications where I'm not as worried about getting in my natural fats.

Eating foods with a higher natural fat content will also help with cravings (and hunger), I find.

The nice thing about Induction is that it's a lot about getting free from those triggers you mention!

Why are you steering clear? As long as you account for the carb content, and keep it within the limits in the book, you should be fine. All spices are allowed on Induction, but make sure they don't contain sugar (some commerical spice mixes do this, like Taco Seasoning).

White vinegar is OK on Induction (Dr. A suggests oil & vinegar for salad dressing). Balsamic vinegar is not allowed because of the sugar content. Read the labels and unless sugar is a major ingredient, you're probably ok.

thanks for the support, I have been logging my weight, everything I eat, and I will post that the log.
I think this is one key step to being successful - good job!
