  • hi there

well lets see im in college and since i moved away have gained 30 pounds, and that aint cool. very strong affect on self esteem. i did atkins the summer before i left just to try it and got much where i think i should be, but like i said, moving took all that away. i have so much trouble being motivated and resisting cravings. cant really talk to people my age about it because theyre all really skinny petite people, im 5'11'' so i thought i would come here and share my story and hopefully make some new friends. nice to meet everyone and hope to hear more about your successes!!!

    God bless

Did you move through OWL to Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance?

i have so much trouble being motivated
    Why?

    and resisting cravings
    What do you crave?

        Re: hi there

thank you for the good luck i will need it and i wish you the same!

unfortunately my lack of motivation stems from my lack of patience as it comes to diets. i get so frustrated because i have never had a problem with weight until these past 2 years and find comfort in food. i crave sugar mostly, i am very much a carb lover but i want so badly to be those people who dont think about the meals they eat, they just see food as nothing more than fuel for the body, i guess i hold it a little bit higher. i find it hard to stay on atkins when i cant afford anything but eggs meat and green beans and it gets hard to eat the same thing wow im surprised at how embarrassing that is to say. i never went through pre maintenance or anything, i kind of stuck to induction for a month or so until i went out of town and wasnt able to do atkins and from then on just down hill.....my LIFELONG dream is to see my abs...and reduce the hip fat cuz i have wideset hips and even when i was underweight people would still make comments about my "childbearing hips" like i said embarrassing but i figure admitting all this is the first step to changing my unhealthy lifestyle.......whew i sound insane lol

          Patience about what?

Atkins is not a "diet", in the most commonly used sense of the word. It's a way of eating for life.

i get so frustrated because i have never had a problem with weight until these past 2 years
Then was then... now is now. And even if you did not have a weight problem, it doesn't mean you were eating healthy.

          i crave sugar mostly
In this case, I would strongly advise you to stay away from artificial sweeteners during the first few weeks. This includes diet sodas, LC products (bars and shakes), sugar free Jello, etc.

i find it hard to stay on atkins when i cant afford anything but eggs meat and green beans
Why only green beans? They are not the only cheap vegetable out there. And if you eat at the university cafeteria during the semester, then I'm sure you have other options for vegetables as well.

Plus, you are forgetting that Induction is not the only phase of Atkins. In OWL you can add back things like fresh cheese, yogurt, nuts, berries, etc.

i never went through pre maintenance or anything, i kind of stuck to induction for a month or so
          Why so long?

Do you have a copy of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)?

i went out of town and wasnt able to do atkins
Going out of town is not an excuse to eat junk.

Maybe you would not have been able to continue Induction, but you could have "done" OWL or even Maintenance.

i have wideset hips and even when i was underweight people would still make comments
Once you accept the way YOUR body is, you won't be so bothered by anyone's comments.

            Re: hi there

lol ok, patience as in waiting for results (i know it aint a good thing)

going out of town with my dad who said i was too skinny and refused to buy me anything having to do with my diet because he preaches on how horrible atkins is made it a tad difficult.

im not excusing my behavior, i know all of this is my fault, im just talking because i have never talked about it before.

i have a stock of beef from our friends farm and cases of green beans so thats why i have such a limited selection. and we have no university cafeteria and i am currently unemployed so all the money i get goes to my ungodly expensive bus pass to get to school.

maybe this explains my situation a little more.

i stayed on it so long because i didnt understand the rest of it. i went in with very little knowledge and just got caught up in the rapid weightloss.

and easier said than done. dont you think id like to accept my body? lol the answer is yes, yes i would. but im human.

Did the arguments in DANDR not convince him? I imagine he hasn't read the book, but you have... right? So you could explain him what Atkins is about. I doubt he will see anything wrong with not eating junk food and choosing plenty of vegetables, meat, cheese, eggs, nuts, berries, etc.

What would you have eaten if you had you not started Atkins?

Not saying it's easy. It's something to work on.

                    Yep.

You can't do what you don't understand.

Do you have a plan for getting the book?

                      any results, lol

he would listen to anything if he thinks im too skinny which i would know if i was . he thinks anything low carb is dumb, dont ask me why, i never understood

up until now i also had a case of those pasta on the side things. obviously buying in bulk at our local sav a lot is a common thing for me haha now that is gone and i see my selection it reminded me of my atkins experience the first time and i thought i would like to start it again but try and figure out a few more things that are cheap that i could throw in there.

trust me ive been working on it my whole life. im sure a lot of people can share my experience of constant ridicule in school and see how those little brats affect you for a long time..pathetic on both parts

im not going to lie, im not sure if you mean that in a sarcastic sense or what....either way, im just not patient and i need to realize my perfect body aint gonna happen overnight, just another thing i need to work on. if i dont see any results i get mad. i guess its just a general anger at myself for getting this far gone. with every reply i realize i just gots some issues!

but God i hope i can get through my first day, thats the worst for me. i feel a little better about the whole thing when im sure im in ketosis. but unfortunately i always have the bad side affects with that until i adjust.

                            No, I wasn't being sarcastic.

The result (not results) you expect seems to be weight loss... but weight loss is only one of the many ways to "measure" our progress. Sometimes you will lose inches without losing pounds, so make friends with the measuring tape. Other times you will lose no inches and no pounds... and this can last for weeks or even months. This is an excerpt from Chapter 12 of DANDR 2002:
                            Some Questions to Ask

Before you decide anything, let's review your results to date, and I don't mean just how many pounds you have lost. Ask yourself these questions:

                            1. Is my appetite under control?
                            2. Am I experiencing food cravings?
                            3. Am I constipated?
                            4. Do I have leg cramps?
                            5. Have I noticed a difference in my measurements as well as in my weight?
                            6. Am I enjoying the food I'm eating?
                            7. Am I sleeping better? Do I have fewer aches and pains? Is my energy level during the day more stable than before? Am I able to concentrate better?
i always have the bad side affects with that until i adjust.
Make sure you eat enough vegetables (don't go over 20 net carbs), enough calories and enough calories from fat (about 60-70%).

And drink more than the minimum 64 oz of water.
