  • Starting a new journey today

Hi there! I'm Jill. I have been overweight since elementary school and was at 180 lbs when I graduated high school in '03. I was in a 4 year relationship ('02-'06) and starting gaining weight a lot after I graduated and moved in with my then-boyfriend. I didn't realize how bad it was getting until I weighed myself in 2006 (after we broke up) and weighed in at 260 lbs. I was shocked and ashamed that I'd let myself get so big.

Like most people on this forum, I have been on diet after diet. I lost a total of 60 lbs in 2007 on Medifast and was able to keep most of it off for about a year and a half, but have gained 40 lbs back in the last year or so. I don't fault Medifast though.. I know why I gained the weight back. I started a relationship with my boyfriend in June of '08. We ate pretty healthy at first, but then we both got a little too comfortable and have gained a lot in the last year. We've tried a couple diets together, but we both have problems sticking to it.

I have always heard of Atkins, but have never tried it. A coworker of mine told me about her friend's success and I decided to look a little more into the plan. It seems like something I can easily stick to, since I can still eat a lot of the foods I love (like red meat). It'll be hard to resist my favorite carb, potatoes, but I know I can do it. And I like that it's not really a "diet" but more of a lifestyle change. Something I can stay on forever to truly maintain my weight loss.

My starting weight is 243. Only 17 lbs away from the biggest I weighed in at before I started Medifast almost 3 years ago. =( I'm not sure what my goal weight will be, as I will see when I get close to it and decide what I'm comfortable at. I'm currently setting my goal at 150, as I don't want to be "skinny," just at a comfortable and healthy weight. I'm 5'2, so 150 will still mean a little chub and I'm okay with that. =)

No, we haven't read the book. I've been going through the Atkins website and other sites related to Atkins. I'm going to order it on Amazon though cuz I found some used copies for really cheap. Also ordering Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss and Dana Carpender's NEW Carb and Calorie Counter (because it includes protein AND net carbs!)

Re: Starting a new journey today

Atkins for Life is geared towards those who don't have weight to lose (or very little) or on maintenance.

The Atkins website (atkins.com) has some incorrect information (ironic, eh?) and their list of Acceptable Foods for Induction is incorrect.

Other Atkins websites may or may not have correct information.

Until the book comes, check out:

Good to know! Luckily, I hadn't placed the order yet, so I deleted it from my shopping cart. Thanks for the tip!

That seems strange... They should really update the website!! I would have been doing it all wrong if you hadn't mentioned that! =\

I went to those threads and printed out copies of the Allowable Foods list and printed copies for me and my boyfriend. =)

              Thanks for all your help!

Re: Starting a new journey today

                Welcome to the Atkins Board.

Glad you found the board and are excited about starting the plan. Make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal. If you can’t find a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) locally check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com. (My copy was under $5.00 including shipping and when it came was brand new even though it said it was "used"). Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables. (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs) http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

Plan your meals for a fews days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin daily. Look at the challenges to see if there is anything that interests you - start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html . Check "loaded cauliflower" -- this a great recipe and tastes like a loaded potato! Also, the mock-a-foni & cheese is so rich and cheesy!

Good luck, if you need anything we’re here to help you!!
                Carole
